Loving husband of Linda Goffstein Carton for 32 years. Beloved brother of Beverly (the late Sandy) Wolff. Dear brother-in-law of Melanie (the late Alan) Heyman and Ina Rae (the late Ken) Lee. Beloved son of the late Bertha Geeser Carton. Dear uncle, cousin and friend.
Gene was a talented athlete in his younger years. He excelled in baseball at Clayton High School and continued playing in various leagues throughout the St. Louis area. In 1967high school, Gene earned the nickname “Whitie” because of his white-blond hair—a name that stayed with him well into adulthood. He was a devoted fan of the “Redbirds,” and remained loyal to the St. Louis Cardinals throughout his life and was a proud member of “Cardinal Nation.”
Gene was a prolific letter writer who regularly submitted his work to the editorial sections of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the St. Louis Jewish Light. Over time, he became well known among readers, many of whom actively sought out his latest commentary.
Gene was well liked by everyone who knew him and always looked for the good in others. Gentle and kind-hearted, he will be deeply missed and forever loved for who he was and all he meant to Linda, Beverly, and the many friends who were fortunate to know him.
