Robert Mitchell was born on December 10, 1935, to James and Effie Mitchell. He was the youngest son of 14 children. He was preceded in death by his seven brothers, Joseph, Theodore, Frank, Harold, Willie, Levi, and James; and two sisters, Beatrice and Judy.
At the tender age of 13, Robert gave his life to Christ and became a devoted member of Miracle Temple Church of God in Christ. His unwavering faith and deep commitment to the Lord led him to ministry, where he faithfully served and touched countless lives with his compassion, wisdom, and spiritual guidance.
In 1957, Robert answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army. He was stationed overseas in Germany, where he served with honor and distinction. During his time in Germany, he embraced the local culture and became fluent in German—a language he continued to study and appreciate throughout his life. On August 31, 1964, Robert was honorably discharged, leaving behind a proud legacy of military service, integrity, and discipline.
It was during the Kansas East Jurisdictional Convocation in the mid-1950s that Robert met the love of his life, Pearlie Mae Jackson. Their shared faith and commitment to education brought them even closer as they attended high school and college together. In 1962, they were united in marriage. Their union was blessed with three children, Robert Jr. in 1963, Kimberly (now Williams) in 1964, and Keith Denair in 1972.
Robert was a scholar at heart. After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education and a Master’s degree in Mathematics from Lincoln University in Missouri, he devoted his professional life to shaping young minds. He served as the head of the mathematics department in the Kansas City Public School District for over 40 years. During that time, he taught and mentored hundreds of students and was respected as a leader and expert in his field.
Robert leaves behind a legacy rooted in faith, education, service, and love.
He is survived by his three children, Robert Jr, Kimberly, and Keith; 11 grandchildren, Chris, David, Quiana, E’Ben, Tia, David, Robyn, Kymberli, Denair, Noelle, and Mylan; and nine great-grandchildren, David Jr., James, Carter, Carrington, Ian, Rudy, Carson, Phoenix, Derrick, and Kai. He is also remembered with love by a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Robert’s life was one of purpose, humility, and grace. He will be dearly missed, but his legacy will live on through the many lives he touched.
