GATE CITY, VA – ROBERT STARNES, AGE 74
Robert Starnes was a quiet, steady man whose life was defined not by seeking the spotlight, but by showing up for others in the ways that mattered most. Born on June 20, 1951, in Kingsport, Tennessee, Robert lived a life rooted in hard work, faith, family, and kindness.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth Starnes and Fred Starnes; several beloved aunts and uncles; and a special cousin, Georgie, who held a dear place in his heart. When Robert lost his father at the young age of 18, he stepped into the role of man of the family—a responsibility he carried with strength, humility, and determination throughout his life.
Robert grew up in Midway, Virginia and graduated from Gate City High School in 1969. He began his working years at Giant Food Markets before becoming a salesman for Pete Moore Appliances in Kingsport. He was later transferred to the Pete Moore Appliances Johnson City store, where he remained until the business closed. Robert spent the final 20 years of his career with Barger Leasing, retiring in 2019. There was rarely a time when Robert wasn’t working. Even in retirement, he stayed busy—working in his yard, on his cars, helping his daughter, or lending a hand to anyone who needed an extra set of hands.
In November, Robert was diagnosed with cancer. After a brief illness, he went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, January 16, 2026.
Above all else, Robert loved his family. He was the proud father of his daughter, Danielle Dye, who was the love of his life. That love grew even deeper with the arrival of his precious grandson, Graham Allen Dye—strong, brave, and named in honor of his Grandad, Robert. Robert called daily to check on Graham, and when Graham was diagnosed with Down syndrome before birth, Robert never wavered in his belief that Graham was sent to be their angel on earth. His eyes lit up whenever Graham entered the room or even when his name was spoken. Graham brought new meaning to Robert’s life, and there was never a moment when Robert wasn’t boasting about how proud he was of him—often speaking of Graham’s strength, resilience, and joyful spirit. Robert also cared greatly about his son-in-law, Chance.
Robert is survived by his loving daughter, Danielle Dye, and her husband, Chance Dye, and his cherished grandson, Graham Allen Dye, who was the pride and joy of his life. He is also survived by his two younger brothers, Randall Starnes and wife Barbara, and Terry Starnes and wife Mendy; his niece, Kristen Sparkman (Josh); his nephew, Ethan Starnes; and his beloved great-niece and great-nephew, Callie Sparkman and Abel Sparkman. Robert also leaves behind several cousins with whom he shared close relationships and remained in regular contact throughout his life. He is also survived by his special companion, Judy France, and held a special place in his heart for her granddaughter, Addison Camper, with whom he shared a loving and meaningful relationship.
A man of faith, Robert was saved at a young age and was a longtime member of Midway Baptist Church. At one time, he also served as a member of the Midway Baptist Quartet, sharing his love of music and worship.
Those who knew Robert knew his gentle smile, his strong work ethic, and his willingness to help without being asked. He also had a sneaky sense of humor and enjoyed being a practical joker. He was a devoted fan of the Tennessee Volunteers, had a sweet tooth a mile wide, loved Harleys and classic cars, and was the kind of man who always had a smile on his face.
