Berlin Robert Talbott Stevens, III, age 86, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, September 5, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Baltimore, he was the only son of the late Robert T. Stevens, Jr and Helen Bramble Stevens. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Sandra Hoffmaster Stevens, and children Robert, IV of Austin Texas, Alice Anne of Edgewater, MD, and Samuel Lee and his wife Anne of Lutherville, MD. There are five grandchildren, Robert V, Scott, Shelby, Benjamin, and Patrick.Mr. Stevens was a 1952 graduate of Towson State Teachers College, earning his Master's degree in Education Administration from Western Maryland College. He began his career as an educator and elementary school teacher in Baltimore, moving into school administration in Montgomery County in 1963. He was a former President of the Gamma Epsilon Chapter of Phi Delta Kappa education fraternity. While in Montgomery County he was instrumental in establishing the first residential program teaching sixth graders outdoor environmental education. He retired in 1984 and moved to Berlin to fulfill a lifetime desire to live by the ocean.In Worcester County he first worked as an Interpretive Ranger at Assateague Island National Seashore and later as a teacher for Elderhostel at UMES Ocean City. He was also a popular guide for motor coach tours of Maryland's Eastern Shore and founded Stevens & Stevens Tour Guide Service with his wife. He volunteered at the Ocean City Life Saving Station Museum where he worked as a docent, greeted visitors, gave weekly boardwalk talks about the history of the Life Saving Service and was past President of the Museum Society. He was a charter member of the US Lifesaving Heritage Association, a board member of the Worcester County Historical Society, and served as the historian for Saint Paul's by-the-Sea Episcopal Church where he was also a member.A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 9, at St. Paul's by-the-Sea, at 1:30 PM.
