Robert's Obituary

Robert W Weir of Crawfordsville rejoined his beloved wife Mary Jane on Tuesday, August 17, 2021.  He was 87.

Bob was born September 9, 1933 in Erie, Pennsylvania to Robert and Mabel (Nissen) Weir. He married the late Mary Jane Lund on January 24, 1959.  His childhood was spent in Erie PA and Buffalo NY.  He started at 16, when he had saved enough money working farms near Buffalo so that when he returned to Erie in the fall, he could buy a team of horses and start farming full time.

Drafted into the army in 1956, he served 6 years, rising to the rank of Technician Specialist 3rd Class.  He was very proud of being one of only 3 in his battalion to earning the outstanding infantryman award and earning the army sharpshooter badge.

After returning from the service, he became an operating engineer, and was a member of the Operating Engineers Union for over 56 years.  He served 12 years as McKean Township supervisor and road master.  He was instrumental in establishing both business parks and agriculture preservation areas.

Moving to Crawfordsville, IN he returned to farming.  In later years, he traded his tractor for his pickup and could be seen regularly road farming around the neighborhood.

He is survived by his daughters, Kathleen (James Greene) Weir of Erie, Pa., and Cynthia (Wayne) Bupp of Crawfordsville, sister Ginger Johnson, niece Diane, nephew Roger and grandchildren, Alicia, Jamie, Andrew, Travis, Tyler and Matthew.

Graveside Services with military rites will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 22, 2021, at Pisgah Cemetery, rural Montgomery County, Indiana.  The family will gather with friends an hour before services at the cemetery.

Porter and Hunt Funeral Home & Crematory has been entrusted with his arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Bob’s memory to the Salvation Army.
