Roger's Obituary

Roger D. Gronewald, 81 of Royal, passed away at 6:19 a.m. Saturday, January 13, 2024, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 18, 2024, at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Flatville with Rev. Scott Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Beckman Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 17, in Diers Hall, Immanuel Lutheran Church of Flatville.  Baier Family Funeral Services, Flatville is handling arrangements.

Roger was born November 6, 1942, in Urbana the son of Henry and Annette Johnson Gronewald.  He married Betty Peterson November 10, 1963, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Flatville.  She survives.

Along with his wife, Betty, he is survived by a daughter, Susan Cotter of St. Joseph; five grandchildren, Nick (Jessica) Miller, Hannah (Jed) Leischner, Elena, Austin and Caleb Cotter; two great grandchildren, Maisie Miller and Jackson Leischner and a third expected in March; and a son-in-law, Jim Miller of Philo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Sandra Wamsley; a daughter, Sharon Miller and a son-in-law, Jim Cotter.

Roger was a life-long member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Flatville and had served on the church council.   He retired from the University of Illinois furniture shop in 2000.  He also owned and operated Roger’s Upholstery for over 40 years.

He had served on the Prairieview School Board and the Village of Royal Town Board.  Roger enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing and especially spending time with his family.
