Not sure what to say?

Mr. Hillstrom was my 7th and 8th grade English teacher. I had the honor of being in Fiddler on The Roof and remembering much of the cast walking from the school to his house to have rehearsal in his living room because Barnum school's auditorium wasn't available one night and Moose Lake's was being remodeled. Also, I was student director for Bus Stop. Mr. Hillstrom made sure that EVERYONE had a part no matter how big or small. Thank you, Mr. Hillstrom for your dedication and devotion to your...

Our condolences to Maury, Michael, Bob, Judy, Susan, Joyce and families. Celebrating Ron's life we are filled with many wonderful memories. Bill and I became close to Cousin Ronnie when he and Margaret became Arizona winter snowbirds. We were fortunate to experience many outings with Ron and Margaret. Ron shared his love of the theater by introducing us to small playhouse shows and now I'm hooked on attending as many theatrical productions as I can. We remember Ron's joy in the...

I had to move into an assisted living facility sixteen months ago. My transition from living independently to needing help and living with others was helped by meeting Ron. We sat across the table from each other at meals until he moved to Cloquet two months ago.
We talked about many things but plays, musicals and sports were his favorite subjects. Especially baseball and the Twins. We discussed who was the best player we ever saw and I chose Mays. He answered quickly with...

Ronnie, you have left an indelible legacy of love of life. Kathy and myself have so many memories related to not only our personal relationship as great friends, but of our two girls from high school. The Arts, Baseball, Softball, Politics and the list goes on. Your Students who have signed the Guestbook say it best. You made their high school days fun, educational, inspiring. Your directing so many quality plays was amazing. Your baseball Coaching, Playing and Love of the game inspiring....

Mr. Hillstrom was my junior high English teacher. He directed one of the plays I was in during high school as well, though I missed out on his amazing run in the one-act play competition that saw so many of his students win awards & filled the display case with photos & trophies. I didn't appreciate it at the time, but his emphasis on grammar and writing was a good foundation for my later education. Although I probably couldn't rattle off the full list of prepositions like we would have to...

Rest in peace to one of the great role model teachers in town. Infectious laugh, great conversations, and all around great guy. Baseball was never the same if you weren't there umping or coaching. Glad i got to see you even after high school. Until we meet again.

Mr. Hillstrom was one of my favorite teachers. I will always remember how he involved himself in my education. He always had interesting stories to tell and he was a positive influence. May he rest in peace and know that he made a difference.

O Mr. Hillstrom, you will be so missed by so many. For all of the musicals and theatre you and our Mom (Eileen Gunderson) created and the fun, fabulous relationship you had as good friends and colleagues, our family forever remembers you with love and a smile.

Maury and Mike, my deepest condolences on the passing of your father. He was one of my favorite teachers. A lot of memories growing up in the neighborhood.

RONALD's Obituary

Ronald LeRoy Hillstrom, 83, Moose Lake began his eternal rest on September 21, 2024 in Duluth. Ron was born on September 3, 1941 in Duluth, the first son of Erland and Ellen Hillstrom. Ron was a 1959 graduate of Menahga High School and received his Bachelor of Science degree in English from UMD in 1964.

Ron and Aileen Luomanen were married from 1963 until her death in 1997. He met Margaret Leppi in 1998, and the couple was united in a private ceremony- remaining companions until her death in 2014. In 2015, Ron married Joyce Haluptzok of Moose Lake.

As a young man, Ron enjoyed playing baseball for Menahga High School and the Wadena American Legion team. From his teen years into his thirties, he also played town team ball for the Meadow Seniors, Red Eye Country Boys, Menahga Warriors, Kettle River Kilowatts, and Moose Lake Lakers.

In 1964, Ron began his teaching career at Moose Lake High School. After briefly teaching at Cloquet High School from 1966 to 1968, he returned to Moose Lake until his retirement in 1998.

Ron had a great passion for the theater, directing over 50 high school and community plays. He enjoyed comedy and drama, but his favorites were the high school musicals: Annie Get Your Gun, The Sound of Music, The Wizard of Oz, Oliver!, My Fair Lady, The Music Man, and Fiddler on the Roof. He was especially proud of the shows that involved his whole family, with Aileen assisting with costumes and props while their sons Maury and Mike took part as young actors.

His service to the schools and community also included advising the National Honor Society, coaching the junior high Knowledge Bowl team, many years of operating the scoreboard at volleyball and basketball games, coaching Moose Lake baseball at many age levels, assistant coaching the MLWR Rebel girls' softball team, and eight years on the Moose Lake City Council.

In retirement, Ron continued umpiring baseball and softball for the Duluth Umpires Association, enjoyed theater productions in Duluth, the Twin Cities, and New York City, and cherished time with family and friends- telling his stories about all of the above.

Ron is survived by his brother: Robert (Janis) Hillstrom of Menahga; sister: Judith (Paul) Miller of Zimmerman; sons: Maury (Mandy) Hillstrom of Lomita, CA and Michael (Lisa) Hillstrom of Woodstock, IL; stepdaughter: Susan (David) Manisto of Moose Lake; grandchildren: James, Allen, and Aileen; step-grandchildren: Matthew, Emily, and Kathryn Roberts; and by Joyce, who along with her family has provided much care and support in recent years.

Visitation will be from 5-7 pm on Friday, October 4, 2024 in Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake.  A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, October 5, 2024 in Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake. There will be a visitation one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.  Burial will be in Leonard Cemetery, Kalevala Twp.
