Ronald's Obituary

Ronald E. “Ron” Wetzel Sr., 94, of Sligo, passed away on Monday, August 18, 2025 at his home.

He was born on February 12, 1931 in Licking Township. He was the son of Albert and Roberta (Whitmore) Wetzel.

Ron married Gladys Vogle on April 7, 1951 and she preceded him in death on January 31, 2005.

He was a man of many trades. He worked for the Sligo Water Company, Penn Dot for ten years, and T.W. Phillips Gas Company, for 17 years. Ron was also Licking Township Supervisor for eight years.

In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, working on his tractor and farm and spending time with his family and friends. He was an avid hunter and shot his last buck ever at the age of 92. In his younger years he enjoyed traveling with Gladys and their friends.

Ron is survived by his daughter, Bonnie Gilbert and her husband Barry of Sligo, four grandchildren; Ashley Guntrum and her husband Michael of Sligo, Kevin Wetzel and his wife Renee of Sligo, Kim Cooper and her husband Brian of Industry, PA., and John Wetzel, five great-grandchildren; Kya, Kolstin, Eli, Easton, and Tallon, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife he is preceded in death by a son, Ronald E. Wetzel Jr., three sisters; Barbara Young, Doris Goughler, and Betty Levy, one brother, Marvin Wetzel and a very close friend, Toni Fickenworth.

Ron’s family will receive friends on Thursday August 21, 2025 at the Varner Funeral Home in Sligo from 12 PM Noon to 3 PM. The funeral service will be held the same day beginning at 3:00 PM with Pastor Tim Shimmons, associate pastor at Grace Community Church in Curllsville, officiating.

Interment will follow in the Callensburg Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Clarion Forest VNA, 271 Perkins Rd. Clarion, PA., 16214.
