Roy Linwood Massey, Jr. entered into eternal rest on Friday, June 16, 2023. Roy was born on January 23, 1959, in Norfolk, Virginia as the fourth oldest of nine children to the union of the late Roy Massey, Sr. and Sylvia Massey. He was affectionately known as “Junnie” by his family and close friends.
Roy was educated in the Chesapeake Public Schools and was a 1977 graduate of Great Bridge High School. He attended Norfolk State University and studied Physical Education, and while there he pledged Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. in Fall 1978. He was a passionate and devoted Miami Dolphin fan.
Roy worked for the New York and Virginia Department of Corrections for many years. He also held numerous jobs where he mastered several trades which he utilized throughout his life.Roy joined Greater Mount Zion on March 22, 1998 where he served in various ministries including the Men’s Ministry, Male Usher Board and the Boy Scouts of America.
Roy was a beloved husband, dad, son, brother, uncle, nephew, grandfather, and friend. He was an avid gardener who loved to cook. He delivered meals to his neighbors whenever he hosted cookouts. His yearly crops were his pride and joy. He was truly a blessing to his family and friends.
His memory will forever live in the heart of those who loved and admired him. He was preceded in death by his father Roy Massey Sr., and brothers Rodney Massey Sr., and Kirk Lewis Sr.Left to cherish his precious memories are his wife Madre Massey; his mother Sylvia Massey and his six children: Keith Ruffin Sr., Jada (Jeff) Capers, Marcus (Vernecia) Ruffin, Jennifer Milton Johnathan Milton, and Lendora Alston and his dearly loved dog ‘Freeway’. He also leaves six beloved siblings Rhonda (James Jr.) Lassiter, Phyllis (Ovid Sr.) Williams, Harold Massey, Karen (Dominic Sr.) John, Sherri McCoy, and Adrienne (Antonio) Thompson. His grandchildren: Tiana, Keith Jr., Kairo, Ayanna, Janiya, London, Courtney, Damya, Artia, Cierra, Jada , Xavier, Raijon, Jonathan Jr. and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 26, 2023 at Faith In Action Church, 4603 Cape Henry Ave, Norfolk. Interment will follow at Roosevelt Memorial Park. Vieiwng will be held from 3pm until 5 pm, Sunday, June 25, 2023 at Prelow and Sons Funeral Home, 500 Liberty Street, Chesapeake.
