Roy's Obituary

Roy P. Nunn, Jr, of Knoxville, Tennessee passed away peacefully on March 16, 2019 at his residence. Roy was born to parents Roy P. Nunn and Beatrice M. Nunn on April 30, 1932 in Galax, Virginia. He was 86 years old.

Roy attended Galax Elementary School and graduated from Staunton Military Academy in Staunton, Virginia in 1950 . After spending his freshman year at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill he transferred to East Tennessee State University and earned a Bachelor of Science. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. During his time at ETSU he met and married Susan Rees of Johnson City, Tennessee.

Before graduating from ETSU in 1957, Roy enlisted in the United States Army in June 1952 and was stationed in Korea during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged as Sergeant First Class in March 1955.

He and wife Susan returned to Galax that year where they raised five children. Roy had a long career in the local furniture industry working for Webb Furniture and Galax Mirror Company. He moved to Knoxville in the early 80's.

Roy is survived by daughter Allison Roeder and husband Richard Roeder of Los Angeles, son David Nunn of Knoxville, Tennessee, daughter Emily Nunn of Todd, North Carolina, daughter Mariah Nunn and husband Davide Bottaro of Floridia,

Italy; sister Judy Alley of Niceville, Florida and sister-in-law Mariah K. Nunn of Galax, Virginia; grandchildren Cody Nunn of Santa Barbara, California  and  Mariah  Nunn  of St. Louis, Missouri; and many n ie ces , nephews and frie nds . Parents Roy and Beatrice Nunn, brother John Nunn and son Evan Nunn predeceased him.

Roy was known for his keen sense of humor and a lifelong passion for reading and collecting books. He was active in the Alcoa Kiwanis and was honored for his years of service as a beloved reading tutor for first graders in the Read Across America for Blount County program in Tennessee .

A memorial service will be held this summer in Galax at  a date to be determined. The family asks that donations to the Chestnut Creek School for the Arts be made in lieu of flowers.
