Ruta Barbora Arbas, age 91, of Beverly Shores, IN passed away peacefully with family at her side Monday, September 18, 2017.
Ruta was born Barbora-Ruta Anuzyte (Anuzis) July 29, 1926 in the small town of Kartena, Lithuania, daughter of Petras Anuzis and Barbora Zablockaite (Zablockas) Anuzis. While Ruta was in her teens, she and her family narrowly escaped arrest and death by the Russian Communist regime and her family was forced to flee their homeland via Austria, and eventually to post-war Germany. She finished high school at a displaced persons camp in Scheinfeld, Germany and from there immigrated in 1949 to the United States. She worked as a laborer for Nabisco for several years in Chicago. In August 1952 she married Liudas G. Arbaciauskas and in 1955 they became naturalized citizens, changing their name to Arbas. They had two children together and moved in 1958 to Beverly Shores, IN in the beautiful dunes to raise family. Ruta was widowed at age 52 and never remarried.
Surviving are son Alvydas (Anne) Arbas and grandson Adam Arbas of Racine, WI; and daughter Gina (Craig) Darnell of Chesterton, IN and grandsons Thomas Darnell also of Chesterton and Nicholas Darnell of Lakeville, IN.
Preceding Ruta in death were her husband, parents, and sister Adele (Victor) Banevicius.
Ruta enjoyed gardening, sewing, and baking for church and club events, and dedicated her life to family. She loved creatures of all kinds—the birds, raccoons, and neighborhood dogs all knew where to find a treat. Ruta served for many years as Secretary of the Lithuanian Club of Beverly Shores and was a past member of the local Women’s Club.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday Sept 23 at 10:00 a.m. at Saint Ann of the Dunes Parrish, 433 East Golfwood Road, Beverly Shores with viewing one hour prior at the church. Interment will follow at 1:00 p.m. at St. Casimir Lithuanian Cemetery in Chicago with memorial luncheon following.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Geisen-Carlisle Funeral Home, 613 Washington St. in Michigan City, IN. Memorial contributions may be made in Ruta’s name to an organization of donor’s choice.
