William and family. I’m so saddened to hear of Ruth’s passing. She was one of the sweetest, kindest people I’ve known. Prayers for you all and know she will be greatly missed.

Les, I'm very sorry for the loss of your mom. I lost mine in 2014, so I can sympathize with you. Your mom is so very special and hope your memories will be a comfort to you always.

Miss Ruth was one of the first members of First Baptist Church who welcomed me into the Family she had the sweetest hugs I will truly miss her

Ruth's Obituary

Ruth Haynes Compton, 85, of Bassett, Virginia, passed away at her home on Sunday, August 17, 2025. She was born on November 14, 1939, to the late Robert L. Haynes and Gladys Cox Haynes. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Timothy Lee Via; two brothers, Elmer Haynes and John Haynes; and two sisters, Beulah Pilson and Marie Ashworth.

Ruth was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Bassett, where she served in the Shawl Ministry and taught Children’s Sunday School for several years.  

She is survived by her devoted husband of 57 years, William C. Compton; three sons, Rick Estes (Michelle), Les Estes (Sandra), and Kevin Compton (Kimra); six grandchildren, Stephanie Brabson (William), Lori Estes, Rachel Keck (Jordan), Sarah Estes, Dustin Via, and Morgan Fretwell; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Bobby Haynes; along with several nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at 2:00 PM at First Baptist Church of Bassett, with Pastor Doug Ramsey officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM. Interment will follow at the Cox Family Cemetery. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Mike and Michelle Lyons, Stacie Latize, and also to Mountain Valley Hospice.
