Beloved Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather.
Samuel Garrett Payne Sr. Born April 14, 1935 in Altavista, VA, to the late Robert L. Payne Sr. and Ruth H. Payne, entered into internal life to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday evening, July 28, 2024. Mr. Payne was 89 years old.
Altavista would also be where he met his first wife, the late, Mrs. Irene Moorman (1999). Creating a home in Hampton VA, their union was blessed with three children: Sammy Jr., Doris "Ann", and their baby girl Sandra "Dee".Mr. Payne was a devoted husband, father. His family was the cornerstone of his life.
His professional life was characterized by a meticulous dedication to his craft, serving Ferguson Enterprises, Inc for 45 years before his well-earned retirement, but his blue-collar work ethic would not let him rest, so he then went on to provide his services for the Hampton City School System for another 14 years offering a helping hand wherever it was needed. His hobbies were a reflection of his love for life. He would have been the first to tell you he had a great life. Enjoyment of the simple things in life. Living his life on his own terms and as his truest self until he left this earth. Mr. Payne lived it to the fullest! No regrets. No words left unsaid.
We grieve at his leaving, but we are relieved that his suffering is over and he is with his loving wife, Mrs. Celestine Hudgins of Warwick County, VA who preceded him in peace in 2014. His son, Samuel G. Payne Jr. (2011) and daughter, Doris A. Ridley (1998). Both of Hampton VA.
Mr. Payne still leaves behind a legacy of love and laughter, survived by his remaining Daughter: Sandra D. Payne of Newport News VA, the remaining sister of eight siblings: Lois Payne Ferguson Scruggs of Altavista VA, And his special niece: Ruth H. Williams (Dempsey) of Hampton, VA. And his legacy will continue to grow with the joy of his Four Grandchildren: Samuel G. Payne III, Anthony R. Ridley Jr., Dwight D. Payne, Danielle N. Leonard, all of Newport News VA. Nine Great-Grandchildren: Tyreic, Tiasia, Amari, Nickole, Jacob, Kaden, Ayden, Kai, & Kalima, who will continue to walk in the light of his wisdom, along with a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins & loved ones.
Mr. Payne's viewing will be held from 4:00pm to 7:00pm on Wednesday, August 7th, at Nickelson-Cummings Funeral Home 4304 Victoria Blvd. Hampton, VA 23669. Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, August 8th, at 11:00am at Third Baptist Church 1214 Victoria Blvd, Hampton, VA 23669. Rev. John Kenney will be officiating. Interment will follow at Hampton Memorial Gardens 155 Butler Farm Road Hampton,Va 2366.
