To the Smith family you have my condolences and you're in my prayers during your time of bereavement. We all were classmates during our elementary school years at Mt. Zion Elementary School. Weeping may endure for a night but joy cometh in the morning.

With heartfelt love, we celebrate the life of our beloved brother, father, uncle, and cherished friend, Samuel Eugene Smith, affectionately known as “Sam” and “Rock.” At the age of 68, Samuel peacefully entered the eternal embrace of the Lord on August 6, 2025, surrounded by loved ones at Onslow Memorial Hospital.
A native of Suffolk, Virginia, Samuel was born on September 20, 1956, to the late Samuel H. Smith and Christine (Lennell) Smith. He is survived by his daughter, Shondesha Goodman; his three sons, Cedric Goodman, Kenyatta Kearney, and Darrick Pope; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his four sisters, Sally Smith, Mary Bynum, Louvenia Smith, and Wenda Smith, all of Suffolk, Virginia; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends who loved him deeply. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Benjamin Smith, and his sisters, Calcy Smith and Minerva Lennell.
Most of Samuel’s adult life was spent in Jacksonville, North Carolina, where he had resided since 1986. Before relocating, he built the foundation of his career in Virginia. He attended Suffolk Public Schools, graduated from Job Corps in 1974, and later earned his welding certification, working at Newport News Shipyard in Newport News, Virginia, until an injury altered his path. During his recovery, Samuel visited his sister, Mary Bynum, in Jacksonville. Captivated by the warmth of the community, he decided to make it his home and soon established lasting friendships and a meaningful presence there—all while holding close his Suffolk roots.
For over two decades, Samuel faithfully served as head custodian at Trinity Methodist Church in Jacksonville, North Carolina. His dedication, strong work ethic, and friendly nature left an indelible mark on the congregation. After retiring in 2023, his connection to his Trinity family remained steadfast, a testament to the bonds he had built.
Samuel will be remembered for his radiant smile, quick wit, and remarkable gift for making everyone feel like an old friend. Even when names slipped his memory, he was famous for creating unique nicknames—endearing labels that often stuck for life. A man of boundless generosity, he delighted in helping others, looked forward to football season each year, and while he wasn’t known for cooking, he never turned down a good meal.
In addition to his beloved Trinity family, Samuel was richly blessed by the love and friendship of his Jacksonville community, who have surrounded his family with comfort and support during this time of loss. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Ron Singletary, Lisa “Lee Lee” and Jim Myers, James “Boo Man” Carter and family, Renita “Nita” White, Kendra and Helen, Kaniesha “K,” Lilly, Anthony, Eddie, and William for their many acts of kindness and compassion—gestures that will never be forgotten.
Samuel Eugene “Sam” Smith leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, loyalty, and light. Though his earthly journey has ended, his spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
