Selsa - Franciscus

Selsa (Sel) Franciscus, 96, of Gilroy, California, beloved mother passed away peacefully at her nursing home in San Jose on Monday, January 27th in the evening. Selsa was born in Fresno in 1928 to parents Refugio and Excelsa Apodaca, the only girl succeeded by 6 brothers and 1 younger brother, she was the last in her family to pass away. She lost 4 brothers early in her life, 2 brothers, John and Louie, were killed in action in WWII, and 3 brothers, Joe, Conrad and David preceded her. 

With her various working history from picking fruit and vegetables in her father’s farm in San Jose, to working in canneries, to working in high-tech, she eventually retired from Pinkertons security in 1998. She moved from San Jose to Gilroy after retiring be in town with her brother Conrad. She enjoyed making friends at the Gilroy Senior Center and involved in their activities, keeping fit at the local health clubs, as well as being a member of the First Baptist Church. She was very active up until the last few years of her life.  Her son took her into his home in Santa Clara to care for her for a few years, where she made friends with neighbors and enjoyed walking.  Her presence and friendly demeanor are missed by everyone who knew her.   

Selsa is survived by her son Anthony and daughter-in-law Aejaie, daughter Mona and son-in-law Mike, and daughter Jan; as well as 7 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. Daughter Elsa preceded her in death. 

No services were held, but arrangements were taken care of by Habing Family Funeral Home and a memorial will be held at a later date with family in Calexico, California.
