Sherman's Obituary

The Man..The Myth...The Legend...

The Man…

Sherman Joseph Jr. was born to the late Sherman and Estella Joseph on August 29, 1952, in Lafayette, Louisiana. He would become known by his family and friends as Dooney, Dooney Bob, or simply Bob. As the eldest son of the Joseph Family, he would spend his younger years with his parents and "big" sister Kathleen in Louisiana before moving to Beaumont, Texas, in the South End Community. During his time in Beaumont, he would earn the title of "Big Brother" as his parents welcomed ten more children into the Joseph Family.

The Myth…

Sherman attended school in Beaumont, Texas, and graduated from Charlton Pollard High School with honors in 1971. As a mighty Bulldog, Sherman was a standout basketball team member and became notorious for his 3-point shot. Some would say that he "invented the 3-pointers" and could shoot a basketball from outside of the gym. Dooney was and is still remembered as one of the greatest basketball players in the Beaumont community.

Upon completing high school, Sherman received a full athletic scholarship to play basketball at the University of Texas at Arlington. He would attend UTA for three years before deciding to become a member of the United States Navy. Sherman would marry after his honorable discharge from the Navy, and two children were born to this union: Kimberly and Sherman III. He would reside in California with his family for a few years, then eventually move home to Beaumont, Texas.

The Legend…

Sherman Joseph Jr. passed away on Tuesday, December 19, 2023, at Birchwood of Beaumont. He was 71 years old at the time of his death. Sherman was preceded in death by his parents, Estella and Sherman Joseph Sr. He is survived by his children, Kimberly Carter and Sherman Joseph III, as well as his siblings, Kathleen Wheeler, Donald Joseph Sr. (Joshlin), Ourelia "Ann" Minkins (Kenneth), John "Pee-Wee" Joseph, Judith "Black" Johnson, Debra Joseph, Allen Joseph, James "Dizzy" Joseph, Gaylon Joseph Sr., David Joseph, and Michael Joseph. He will be forever loved and cherished by his grandchildren, Taylor Carter, Tonie Carter, Ambriz Mack Jr., Myrikel Joseph, and Santana Joseph, and his great-grandchildren, Noah Bell and Zaire French. A host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends also survive him.
