REST IN PEACE SHIRLEY

Jonell, Peggy and Cindy,
I just found out about your mom's passing and want to express my sympathy to all of you and your families.
I have so many fond memories of Shirley from growing up together in Hamberg, staying at Lies' while going to high school, being in their wedding, visiting each summer when we came home on vacation. My family loved her wonderful cooking. In later years, Helen, Esther, Shirley and I always got together for lunch and a fun afternoon when I came to North...

Mrs. Kittleson was always so nice and genuine. She had a beautiful soul. My prayers are with Peggy, Jonelle and Cindy. God bless!

My deepest sympathies to Shirley's family, your loss is great, and I know you will deeply miss her. I have such fond memories of Shirley! She was a great Sunday School teacher, always smiling and lots of fun! I also have great memories of visiting her at the locker plant. My Mom, Esther (Klindworth) Indergaard considered Shirley one of her closest friends, it was always fun to see the two of them together! Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers.

Jonell, Peggy, Cindy and all Shirley’s grand children and great grand children:
There are so many memories it is impossible to list but when we were all growing up, it was a warm, loving family that got together for holidays. Shirley was a big part of those delicious meals with everyone present for fun and games and laughs. Shirley enjoyed the tail of the turkey - she had no competition! A friend of mine still salivates when thinking of Shirley’s pork chops. Always up for a good time...

Jonell, sending sympathy to you in the passing of your mom. She was such a friendly, smiley lady.

Such a fun loving kind woman.we bowled together years and years ago and I also had the privilege of working with Shirley. She was kind, dependable and always kept things light and fun. May her memories bring you peace.

I remember being over at her house. When I was a kid north of Hamburg, we were there a lot. Mom and dad, and them we're good friends. I think about them and the girls when I drive by there. I'm so sorry for your loss she was a great lady .

Our sincere condolences to Shirley's family. She was a fun, friendly and lively lady. Our mom, Darlene Dietz, so enjoyed times spent with Shirley and friends. Peace be with you.

Shirley's Obituary

Shirley (Geisler) Kittelson passed away peacefully from leukemia on Thursday, September 21, 2023, at the age of 86, surrounded by her loving family..  A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, November 5, 2023 at First Lutheran Church, Harvey, North Dakota.  Pastor Katie Rodriguez will officiate and burial will be at Hillside Cemetery, Fessenden, North Dakota.  Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.  Arrangements are with Nelson Funeral Home, Fessenden, North Dakota.

She was born on March 31, 1937, in Harvey, North Dakota, to Walter and Frieda (Pepple) Geisler. Shirley grew up in Hamberg, North Dakota, and attended grade school in Hamberg and high school in Fessenden, ND.  On January 29, 1956, she married Clayton Kittelson at the Concordia Lutheran Church.  Their first home was on the Kittelson family farm north of Hamberg, where they had three daughters.

From 1960 to 1963, Shirley and Clayton lived in Bottineau, North Dakota, before returning to Hamberg, to the farm where they farmed small grains, and also owned and operated the Hamberg Locker Plant from 1963 to 1979.  After the passing of Clayton in 1989, Shirley worked as a service provider for people with intellectual disabilities from 1989 – 2016.  She eventually settled in Harvey, ND.  In May 2018, Shirley moved to Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and became a well-known and active member of the Summit Place Independent Living community.

Shirley was active in the Hamberg, Fessenden and Harvey Lutheran churches.  She was proud of participating in the “Merry Maids” homemakers club for over 50 years, and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Red Hat Ladies and Craft Club.

You only had to meet Shirley once to remember her for a lifetime.  Shirley will be fondly remembered by all who knew her for her cooking, baking (homemade buns!), canned pickles and the “Shirley Shuffle.”  She enjoyed sewing matching dresses for her 3 young daughters, reading, antique glassware, clothes shopping, and gardened every year until her passing. She had a passion for ice cream, country music, and listening to and attending Daniel O’ Donnel concerts.  She loved lutefisk, and attended the Norsk HostFest over 30 times.  She was in her element playing bingo, card games and dominos with friends.  Shirley was an unwavering fan of the Twins, never missing a game and kept tabs on the personal lives of all of the players. Her contagious smile, regular check-ins with loved ones (usually texting), and her birthday and holiday cards will be deeply missed.

Shirley is survived by her two siblings: Terry (Cheryl) Geisler, Aberdeen, SD, and Jan (Tom) Nermyr, Kerrville, TX, as well as her three daughters: Jonell Rittmiller, Fargo, ND, Peggy (Randy) Lembke, Foristell, MO, and Cindy (Bill) Gafford, Chaska, MN.   She also leaves seven grandchildren:  Amy (Chris) Blair, Adam (Ashley) Baker, Amber Baker, Chad (Julie) Lembke, Lindsay Gafford, Brittany (Tom) Moor, and Kevin (Samantha) Gafford, as well as her seven great-grandchildren: Libby, Maddox, Abigail, Cora, McKenzie, Eleanor, and Lucy.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Frieda Geisler; her husband, Clayton Kittelson; her companion for 20+ years, Marvin Gisi; and her son-in-law, Vincent Rittmiller.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
