Grandma Sophie was one of the most generous people with her love I have ever met. From the moment she knew her son loved my mom, she treated me and loved me as a grandchild. I will miss her joy in the few calls we could share but will remember and honor her always.

Sophie M. Bandura (nee Depa)

Age 92, a lifelong resident of the Calumet Region, passed away surrounded by loving family on Sunday, December 1, 2024. Sophie is survived by her beloved husband of 70 1/2 years, Steve; sons: Timothy (Kathleen) Bandura, Steven (Nan) Bandura, and Gerald (Joyce) Bandura; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and sister, Theresa (late, Laurence) Lauerman. Preceded in death by her parents, John and Angeline Depa; three brothers; and six sisters.   

Sophie was a 1950 graduate of Hammond High School and worked for United Boiler in Hammond. She was a member of the Polish Women’s Alliance. Above all else, Sophie was a dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. We will carry her smile and her love in our hearts forever.

Friends may visit with the family on Wednesday, December 11, 2024 from 4:00 – 8:00 PM at Solan Pruzin Funeral Home, 14 Kennedy Ave Schererville, IN.  There will be a 7:00 PM Parastas.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, December 12, 2024 at 10:00 AM DIRECTLY at St. Nicholas Byzantine Catholic Church, 8103 Columbia Ave., Munster, IN with Rev. Steven Koplinka officiating. Sophie will lie in state at the church from 9:30 AM until the start of the service. Burial to follow at St. Nicholas Cemetery, Hammond, IN. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Carmelite Home – Damar in East Chicago or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
