Stamatis Galanes, lovingly known as Pappouli, Dad, and Ba, passed away surrounded by his family after a life defined by love, kindness, and service.
He was born in Vervena, Greece, raised in Astros, and studied carpentry and cabinetry at the Savitanidio Technical School of Athens. There he developed the work ethic, resourcefulness, and warmth that carried him throughout his life. At the age of 29, he immigrated to the United States, embracing a new country while never losing touch with his deep Greek roots.
Stamati was a man of many talents—the original MacGyver—who could fix anything and delighted in creating solutions for those he loved. From building an incubator so his daughter could raise chickens to teaching his son how to use tools by his side, he passed down both skills and values through everyday moments.
He was married for 57 years to his beloved wife, Doreen (née Pappas), honoring her and his family with devotion and loyalty. Stamati also faithfully served his church community in countless ways—whether repairing cabinets, preparing meals for Philoptochos, or serving on the parish council—always giving of himself without hesitation.
His presence was a gift: always welcoming, always joyful, and always ready for adventure. His kindness left an imprint on everyone who met him, and his legacy of love and generosity lives on through his family.
Stamati is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Doreen (née Pappas) Galanes; his daughter, Tanya Galanes; and his son, Leo Galanes, who is married to Nikole (née Tingos). He was the cherished Pappouli of his grandchildren, Stamatios, Xeni, and Theodore Galanes, who will carry forward his spirit in their lives. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews in the United States, Canada, and Greece.
Though the last chapter of his life was marked by hardship, he faced it with bravery. His memory will forever be eternal, carried in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church of Oak Lawn, IL appreciated. “May His Memory Be Eternal”
