Not sure what to say?

Steve ( Reggie to some) was a sweetheart. Steve and his family were close to the Bayly family as we grew up in University Park. I remember him with a smile on his face and a warm hello. May he rest in Paradise.

Stephen's Obituary

STEPHEN ROBERT WHELTONAugust 16, 1952 - March 9, 2025

Stephen R. Whelton passed away peacefully at his home in Gloucester, VA on Sunday, March 9, with Nina, his loving wife of 40 years by his side. He will always be remembered for his heart of gold, his devotion to family, loyalty to friends, love of dogs, his wicked sense of humor, fondness for discussing politics and watching baseball, football and basketball.

Steve was born to Richard Lee and Jacqueline Odell Whelton on August 16, 1952, at Sampson Air Force Base Hospital in Geneva, NY, where his father was stationed during the Korean conflict. He is survived by his wife, Nina L. Whelton, and four of his siblings, Paul T. Whelton, Elizabeth-Ann Mouledoux, Suzanne Whelton and Richard L. Whelton, Jr.  Steve was predeceased by his parents and his older sister, Mary-Louise Raynor.

Steve grew up in Washington, DC and University Park, Maryland. He attended Campus School of Catholic University, St. John's College High School, LaGrange College and the University of Maryland.  His career highlights included Assistant Director of the Sports Information department at the University of Maryland, where he was media liaison for the football and basketball teams. In the 1980s, he often freelanced as a statistician for his beloved Washington Redskins. Later Steve worked as a broker for Admiral Insurance and eventually founded his own company, Automotive Insurance Brokers of Maryland, a successful business he and Nina ran for over 20 years.

After selling the business, Steve and Nina started their retirement by moving to Tampa FL.  Even though they loved their new neighbors and the warm weather of Florida, they missed their families so they returned to Maryland to be near their aging parents. Steve's compassionate nature was shown by the care he gave to his parents, mother-in-law and his extended family. After several years in the Baltimore area, Steve and Nina settled in their new home in Gloucester, VA, where they made many wonderful friends who surrounded them with love and support during Steve's illness.

Private burial will be at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, MD, where Steve will rest in peace near his parents and sister.  A Celebration of Life will take place in May; date to be determined. For details contact: [email protected]

Donations in Steve's memory can be made to Riverside Walter Reed Hospice, Gloucester, VA or the ASPCA/Memorial Gifts.
