Steven Michael Smith, 57 of Sugar Camp, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 17, 2026. Steve was known to many by his nicknames, Buzz or Skeeter.
Steven was the youngest child born to Beverly and Lawrence Smith on July 29, 1968, in Marshfield, WI.
Steve grew up in Dorchester, Wisconsin, and attended Dorchester Elementary. He graduated from Colby High School in 1986.
Steve started his career at Liberty Homes, and after discovering that was not the right fit for him, he hit the open road, hauling freight all over the country for nearly thirty years. Steve worked for several trucking companies and ended his career at Sowinski farms. Many family members have fond memories of riding with him, and it wasn’t unusual to see him with his favorite canine co-pilot.
On October 3rd, 2009, Steve married Jennifer Peterson. They spent their lives surrounded by their furry family members. They enjoyed traveling, camping, and spending time with their various critters.
Steve will be remembered for his kind heart, loyal friendships, and dedication to his family.
Steve is survived by his wife, Jennifer Smith, mother, Beverly Smith, brother, George Smith, brother, Tom (Lori) Smith, brother-in-law, Mike Stock, brother, David (Toni) Smith, brother, John (Julie) Smith, step daughters from a previous marriage, Sarah Cook and Stephanie (Justin) Rowland, three grandchildren, mother-in-law, Katie Peterson, several aunts and uncles, and many nieces, and nephews, and great nieces and great nephews.
Steve was preceded in death by his grandparents, his father, Lawrence Smith, brother, Jerry Smith, sister, Alisa Stock, nephew, Derek Smith, father-in-law, David Peterson, and several aunts and uncles.
The visitation for Steve will be held on Monday, March 23, 2026, at the Hildebrand Funeral Home located at 24 E. Davenport Street, from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. with a memorial service taking place at 1:00 p.m.
Dn. Ray Ambrosius will officiate. In addition to this, a celebration of life will follow at a later date.
