The best times!
Even from afar, I share in your grief and in celebrating the beautiful life Summer lived. I will always remember the laughter and warmth she brought into my life. She was the greatest friend a person could ask for and will always hold a special place in my heart. Continuing to keep your family close in my thoughts and first in my prayers. Katie

I worked with Summer in PACU at Chesapeake. She was one of the smartest, hardest working, and best nurse. She was not only a mentor but my close friend. A wicked sense of humor with a laugh I’ll never forget. Her knowledge of nursing, her no nonsense attitude, and her calm, collected nature made her a force.
Thank you for your friendship, Summer. I am so grateful for the time our paths crossed. You will be sorely missed.
My sincerest condolences to the family. Peace be...

Summer April O’Dell, 48, of Virginia Beach and formally from Tylerville, NY passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, August 10, 2025, at Virginia Beach Hospital with her daughter by her side.
Summer was born July 6, 1977, in Carthage, NY., the daughter of Mark O’Dell and Sandra Coliet. Summer grew up in Tylerville alongside her six siblings: Trevor, Maxine, Maggie, Justin, Molly and Heavenly and their father Mark. She is a 1995 graduate of Copenhagen Central School. Summer went on and graduated from SUNY Potsdam with a Political Science degree and later went on to graduate from Dutchess Community College with her Nursing Degree. She pursued her professional career as a Registered Nurse.
Summer married Garfield Hewitt and together had a beautiful daughter, Jaida Elise. The marriage ended in a divorce.
Summer is survived by her daughter, Jaida, her father and stepmother, Mark O’Dell and Cherri Thompson, siblings, Trevor and Kimberly O’Dell; Maxine Jones and Kevin Giordano; Maggie O’Dell and Jason Madison; Justin O’Dell and Amy Simser; Molly and Justin Ormsby, Heavenly Duerson and Jeremy Pitkin; stepbrother’s, Justin and Melissa Mooney; Brian Mooney and Tim Staring. Also survived by her nieces and nephews whom she adored, Mathew, Giada, Kira, Clayton, Shea, Nataleigh, Thomas, Zoey, Ava and Blake. She is predeceased by her mother and paternal grandparents, Gilbert and Geradline O’Dell and maternal grandparents, Orlin and Mary Lyndaker.
Summer would illuminate not only the room she entered, but the people around her as well. She was ambitious and career-driven, while also being a loving, caring and attentive mother and aunt. She was the type of person to offer the coat off her back, if you were cold and the kind of person to make your favorite meal when you were having a bad day. She cherished and treasured every moment she had with her friends, family, colleagues and patients. It is an understatement to say Summer was extraordinary, because she was so much more than that.
There will never be another soul quite as mesmeric as hers.
Summer was a daughter, sister, mom, aunt and friend-and we will carry her in our hearts always.
Services will be held privately for her family.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, August 30th, from 1:00 pm- 3:00 pm at the Adams Country Club.
In lieu of flowers, any donations can be made to” gofundme.com” (Honor Summer by supporting Jaida’s future).
Arrangements are with Carpenter-Stoodley Funeral Home and online condolences to her family can be made at www.carpenterstoodley.com
