Obituary – Tamera Diane Newman HortonSunrise: February 27, 1973 – Sunset: August 14, 2025

Tamera Diane Newman was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on February 27, 1973,to Robert and Diana Newman. Affectionately known as “Tammy,” she would grow up tobecome an inspirational figure amongst several communities just as her parents areknown to be. Tammy was the youngest daughter, but never far behind her older sister Tanya, whogrew up in the West Oak Lane and Mt. Airy sections of Philadelphia. She attended A.B.Day Elementary School before completing middle school at Charles. W. Henry School.Following in the Newman family tradition, Tammy joined her sister and many cousins atWissahickon High School in Ambler, PA, where her father and other family members arecurrently in the Hall of Fame. While participating as a cheerleader at Wissahickon HighSchool, Tammy would meet rival school running back Eric R. Anderson of CheltenhamHigh School, which a few years later led to the blessing of her first-born child, Eric C. R.Anderson, born January 1, 1991. Tammy would go on to further her education attendingVirginia State University and then several years later, Temple University where her areaof study was Psychology. In 1994, Tammy would marry Otis Barlow and although their union was short-lived, hersecond son, Robert Barlow, was born on February 15, 1997. An additional blessing fromthis union came in the form of a daughter who she forever refused to call stepchild,Sasha Barlow and several other extended family members who continue to show upand show out as true family should.Tammy’s commitment to serving Christ also started at a very early age while attendingMt. Zion Baptist Church of Germantown. As a young adult, she used her beautiful voiceto sing regularly with the Young People’s Inspirational Choir, under the direction of hermother Deaconess Diana Newman. As she became older, her participation in churchactivities would grow substantially leading to her becoming a true pillar in Mt. Zion. In1997, she co-founded the “Men in Christ” Step Ministry at Mt. Zion which would go on toserve as the blueprint for Baptist Step Teams for young men and women throughout thestate of Pennsylvania. In a similar manner, she then started Mt. Zion’s “Hands of Praise”Mime Ministry which eventually led to there being a Sacred Arts Ministry at the church, incorporating the dance and flag ministries. Trusting God’s calling, Tammy would laterbe consecrated as a Deaconess to which she served as Chair of the DeaconessMinistry for several years. Additionally, she served on the Praise and Worship Team,Van Ministry, Sound Ministry, Vacation Bible School Staff, February Circle, Angel Tree,

Thanksgiving and Christmas Baskets Team, often as a ministry officer, and could alwaysbe found directing or singing with choirs both in and outside of Mt. Zion.To no one’s surprise, Tammy’s commitment to serving Christ extended beyond Mt.Zion’s doors, the city of Philadelphia, and the state of Pennsylvania. What started out asa mother supporting her son as he participated in the Pennsylvania Baptist StateConvention’s Eastern Region Youth and Young Adult Choir, later turned to an amazingwoman of God answering the call to not only ensure maximum participation of Mt. Zion’syouth in the State Convention, but to also accept officer roles lasting over fifteen yearsimpacting youth across the State of Pennsylvania. Tammy climbed the ranks in thePennsylvania Baptist State Convention and in February 2022, was appointed the StateDirector of the Pennsylvania Baptist State Convention Youth and Young Adult Ministry.Tammy was well-known and recognized for her various workshops where sheempowered both the youth and adults to use their gifts in the arts to worship the Lord. While being a pillar in her communities, Tammy met the love of her life, ReverendWalter D. Horton Jr., in 2000. As mental health therapists working together at TheConsortium Inc, Walter and Tammy instantly gravitated toward each other and weren’teven surprised when they realized that their families knew each other. On September 6,2003, Walter and Tammy married and became inseparable for 21 years. They lived forwatching the Philadelphia Eagles together with their football ministry whenever theyweren’t traveling, spending time with family, or heavily involved with church activities. This year for their 22nd Anniversary, they were planning to renew their vows at thebeautiful Niagara Falls, of course all planned out in detail by Tammy. Leave it to her toplan an extravagant vow renewal ceremony in another country with zero assistance. Following her departure from The Consortium Inc in 2005, Tammy went on to become aYouth Advocate with the Philadelphia Youth Advocate Program, where she directlymentored troubled female teenagers for 5 years, many of whom have gone on tobecome responsible adult women with careers and families of their own. In 2010,Tammy was forced to leave the workforce due to being diagnosed with chronic heartfailure. Although she could no longer work formally in her trained career fields anymore,Tammy ramped up her already thriving event coordinating business. Through hercompany, “Ultimate Weddings and Events,” Tammy has coordinated over 100 weddings, countless baby/bridal showers, and an endless amount of formal church events. In her more recent years, Tammy thoroughly enjoyed spending time being “Lolli” to hergrandchildren, when she wasn’t tending to her mother and sister. She enjoyed bakingfor everyone, and her cookies were to die for. She was the biggest cheerleader to all ofher children and recently became a huge hit at Eric’s (aka Rico) residency shows withhis band where she would serenade the crowd at the end of the night during Karaoke. A

true songbird, Tammy’s angelic voice will be missed across several spaces by all whowere blessed to hear and know her. Tammy was preceded in death by her father, Robert Newman, bonus mother, CarolNewman; and bonus son, Donte Horton.
