Not sure what to say?

Tom wrote to me in 2002. I don't remember how he found me, but he told me he knew about my late brother, Jim, but didn't know about me. I was born 5 1/2 months after my dad, Hanford "Rusty" James Rustand was KIA during WWII. I saw my first picture of my dad after my mother died--I was 32. My mother's side of the family has passed, and I recently loss my husband, Our lives were full of fun and adventure, and I believe I will miss him the rest of my life. I don't know how people get...

What a blessing Tom was! He is jogging in Heaven. And nobody can keep up. God bless you all during this difficult time. Praying for your peace.

Dear Janice,
You and Tom have always held a special place in my heart. Just this spring we gathered at the family reunion and it was so great to hug both of you.
You know my favorite memory .
It is Rick’s and my first wedding anniversary, we head out of Minneapolis with everything we own in a little UHaul trailer pulled behind our aging car. The transmission lasted until we stopped for gas in Sioux Falls. After a couple phone calls to my dad and Grandma Mae we suddenly had a...

Tom was a very kind and considerate person. A gentleman in every regard.

I remember Tom and Jan from piano recitals for his grandchildren Mikaela and Levi. They were always there to cheer the kids on. What a pleasant couple and I know that Mikaela and Levi will miss their grandpa very much.

Tom was a great person and longtime friend. We served in the Air Force together. He will be missed.

Tom and Jan welcomed us as neighbors when we first moved to Sioux Falls.
We found we also attended the same church- Abiding Savior.
Our love and prayers are with your family.

Tom's paternal grandmother Inga Marie and my maternal grandmother Marie were sisters born in Norway.
As teen agers they immigrated to the USA with their parents and other siblings. Tom & my great-grandparents,
Iver and Karen Anderson, were part of a deep spiritual faith of Pietism. It's a blessing of Tom and my heritage!

I remember Tom from our years at Russell High School, where he was a eleventh grader and I was a twelfth grader. We spend a lot of time on the basketball court, on the track field or on the baseball diamond either as teammates or as competitors at practice honing our skills. Of course as we both graduated from high school our lives took different routes which happens so many times with young people from rural America. My memories of Tom were mainly from those high school years as we begin our...

Obituary

Thomas's Obituary

Thomas Lee Rustand, 82, went to be with the Lord on Monday, November 6, 2023, surrounded by his loving family.

Tom's funeral will be at Abiding Savior Free Lutheran on Friday, November 10, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. central time with a luncheon to follow.  Private family burial will take place at the South Dakota State Veteran's Cemetery prior to the service.

Tom was born in Tyler, Minnesota on May 25, 1941, to Clarence Inor and Louise (Hagge) Rustand.  He attended grade school in Minneota, Minnesota before completing his high school education in Russell, Minnesota.  Following high school, he served four years in the United States Air Force and received an Honorable Discharge in 1963.  Tom married his high school sweetheart, Janice Vercruysse, on December 16, 1961, at Grace Lutheran Church in Russell, Minnesota and they were married for nearly 62 years.

Tom and Jan had two sons.  Tony (Franny Cantrell, Bobby and Mark Cantrell) of Carney, Oklahoma and Tim (Elaine Palmberg) and grandkids, Mikaela and Levi Rustand of Brandon, South Dakota.  Tom’s family was always the center of his life.  He enthusiastically participated in the events of their growing-up years and was incredibly proud of the adults they have become. His comforting thought was that his family knew Jesus.

Tom started Rustand Business Machines in Marshall, Minnesota and operated it until 1972. He then began working at Farmers State Bank in Russell, Minnesota.  Tom eventually purchased the bank and operated it with Jan until selling the bank in 1982 and moving to Sioux Falls.

He enjoyed fishing in Canada for many years with friends.  He and Jan also enjoyed traveling in their camper to Arizona for over 25 years in the winter. There they were avid hikers, bikers, and adventurers with their young-at-heart friends.  Tom had many special memories with grandkids that included swimming, fort-making, biking, canoeing, exploring, and doing many of the things that only grandparents can get away with.

Tom’s personality made people feel special and important.  He made friends wherever he lived.  Tom was quick to serve others or simply share coffee and conversation.  He took great joy in being a “behind-the-scenes” servant.  A summer highlight was faithfully serving at Rodeo Bible Camp for many years which combined his love of kids, horses, and sharing the gospel.  He was instrumental in encouraging The Liberty Quartet from Idaho, to bring their Gospel message to Abiding Savior for over 13 years.  Many people will remember Tom as the warm smile, firm handshake, and welcoming personality that greeted them at church on Sunday mornings.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Robert C. Rustand, his sister-in-law, Deanna Rustand, and nephews, Lee Rustand and Steve Regnier.  He is survived by his immediate family and one sister, Phyllis Regnier, from St. Peter, Minnesota and nieces and nephews.
