Thomas Gold Weathers Jr., 86, passed away on Saturday, March 28, 2026. He is survived by his daughter, Yancie Costner; son-in-law, Randy Costner; grandchildren, Allie and Evan Costner, all of Gastonia; and a nephew, Henry Schliff, of Colorado. No formal services will be held. Daughter, Yancie Costner provided the following in memory of her father.“Thomas Gold Weathers Jr. was a philosopher, a writer, a poet, a deep thinker, a lover of all things science, a son, a husband, an uncle, a grandfather, but most importantly to me he was my beloved Daddy. He and my mom had me later in life, so he treated me as if I were older and spoke to me about all of his interests as if I were his equal. We would go on long walks on Saturdays in Shelby (aka the center of the known universe) and talk mostly about science and outer space because those were my favorite topics, especially black holes. He knew so much. From my perspective as a child, it seemed like he had all the answers. It's funny because we had daily coffee dates until the last year of his life and that was what we primarily discussed. Black holes, The Big Bang, String Theory, astrophysics, and of course our mutual hatred of all things Trump. That last one, he retained up until the very end, even when his world was turned upside down. Gotta love him. Dementia is an unforgiving disease. Once you're beyond the event horizon, there's no going back. The twisting, churning forces destroy your memories as well as your life. Eventually, you are the singularity. One day I hope to see daddy again and ask him about all of that, and maybe whether there's anything on the other side. In lieu of a traditional gathering of friends, he would want everyone to have a Dos Equis at your favorite Mexican Restaurant and have a deep discussion with your family on your favorite topic.
