Not sure what to say?

Eli's Aunt Cathy and family send their deepest sympathies to Tim's family, friends, and neighbors. We pray that your memories of Tim will help sustain you through the difficult times ahead. RIP!

My deepest sympathy to Lorraine and the McDonough children on the loss of their beloved husband and father. I recall Tim from our college days at Duquesne--he was well known as an active leader of the Duquesne Duke newspaper and the Duquesne radio station, and was also extremely respected as the editor of the creative publication full of student poetry, art, and photographs, the Duquesne Magazine. Tim created a lasting legacy in the world of journalism and media, and his love of literature...

We are honored to have known Tim, for what seems like just a brief moment. Ever kind, gracious, generous, welcoming, and witty, it was such a deep pleasure to spend time with him. He will be missed, and we uplift Lorraine, Colleen, and James in loving hope that they be comforted, find peace, and feel the warmth and support of us all, in sharing memories and love for Tim.
Marilyn and John Dolly

Sending our love and support to your entire family, from your Cisco family. Knowing the wonderful person that Timothy raised in James, we know that his legacy and memory will always be honored.

Lorraine, Colleen & Eli, James... Please accept our most sincere condolences for this devastating tear in the fabric of your family. His legacy - his family - will live on through you, in all the best ways. It was a pleasure to have met him and I sincerely hope your fond and fun memories with your husband/dad will help sustain you as you grieve.

May God bless you and your family. We will keep you in our prayers.

May the road rise up to meet you
May the wind be always at your back
May the love of your family and friends shine upon you
And may GOD hold you in the palm of his hand
Until we meet again

Obituary

Timothy's Obituary

Timothy McDonough, a lifelong Pittsburgher, devoted journalist, husband, and father passed away at his home on December 31st at the age of 68.

Tim was born in the Beechview neighborhood to James and Ann McDonough, and he was raised alongside his three siblings, Mary, Sarah, and John.

Tim attended St. Catherine of Siena Grade School, where his curiosity and love of storytelling led to an early interest in journalism through school publications. At South Hills Catholic High School, he served as editor of the school magazine and newspaper.

He went on to attend Duquesne University, where he further developed his passion for journalism through work with the university’s radio station and magazine, and as an editor for The Duquesne Duke.

Tim dedicated more than four decades to journalism, beginning as a regional reporter and editor at the Pittsburgh Press before joining the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, where he worked until his retirement in 2024. Throughout his career, Tim was known for his integrity, mentorship, and commitment to telling meaningful stories—especially those that elevated voices sometimes unheard.

Tim met his wife, Lorraine, while at Duquesne University. They married in 1984 and celebrated their 41st anniversary this past year. Together, they raised two children, whom Tim loved deeply and supported wholeheartedly.

Tim was a dedicated coach in basketball, baseball, and softball, with a strong interest in youth sports development and scouting. He was an avid reader, lover of poetry and classical music, a devoted Pittsburgh Pirates fan, and a gracious host who delighted in sharing meals - especially backyard barbecues - with family and friends. He was closely connected to the Sacred Heart community, where he supported parish life by editing The Sacred Heart Beat newsletter while his children attended.

Tim is survived by his wife Lorraine, daughter Colleen McDonough, her husband Eli Dolly, and his son James McDonough.

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages honoring Tim’s legacy by supporting local journalism.

Family and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass at St. Jude Parish, Sacred Heart Parish, 310 Shady Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206 on Friday, January 9, 2026 at 10:00 a.m.
