“When the time comes to bid this life farewell, we should find comfort in knowing that a loving God will be there to guide us to our new home.”
Tommy Harmon departed this life on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at the University of Virginia Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was born on July 22, 1947, in Charlottesville, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Harmon Sr. and Lucy Jane Slaughter Harmon; his loving wife, Robin Denise Coles Harmon; one brother, William Harmon; and two sisters, Mary Francis Starkes Lewis and Getrude Harmon Scott.
He leaves to cherish his memory two sons, Michael Harmon and Corey Harmon (Tonya), of Charlottesville, Va, Tommy will be missed dearly by his four brothers, James Harmon of Charlottesville, Va, Frank (Carolyn)of Richmond, Va, Michael, and Matthew Harmon (Jennifer)of Charlottesville, Va; four sisters, Madeline Hester (Bobby)of Charlottesivlle, Va, Donna Howard, Darlene Davis(Rick), and Lorraine Kenney (John)of Riichmond, Va; his sister-in-law, Kim Coles Swift(Frankie) of Charlottesville, four grandchildren, Michael, Makailah, Cordara, and Courtney. and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Tommy made a lasting imprint on Charlottesville’s athletic community as a standout football player for the Burley Bears. He dazzled on the field as a running back, even surprising his head coach, who remarked, “We found a runner we didn’t even know we had,” after he sprinted in for a 55-yard touchdown as a freshman in 1963. His athletic abilities were well known by his senior year, yet he continued to stun fans and opposing defenses alike. Tommy set many scoring records on his way to earning the Most Outstanding Player award and leading the Bears to an unbeaten record in 1966. For decades, family and friends proudly described his proficient scoring, which included a 7-touchdown game that aptly reflected his nickname, “Touchdown Tommy Harmon”.
After graduating from Jackson P. Burley, Tommy began a career in Operations. He retired from Sears Roebuck after 30 years as a Receiving Supervisor. He also worked for Jaunt, Inc. for many years. Tommy enjoyed life to the fullest and was happiest spending time with his family. We will fondly remember his love of visits to Aberdeen Barn, playing Bid Whist, and his staunch support of the Washington Commanders. Our family will miss his calm disposition and kind spirit.
He was a loving husband, a devoted father, grandfather, and a loyal brother.
