Velma C. Dilworth, a woman of immeasurable worth and grace, was tenderly called home by the Divine Collector on August 14, 2025, to become part of His eternal treasure. Born on August 20, 1942, in Jackson, Mississippi, she was the youngest child of George and Henrietta Thompson Sr. She was preceded in death by her brothers, George Thompson Jr. and Andrew “A.W.” Thompson.
Like any precious jewel, Velma’s brilliance was cultivated over time. She began her education in Jackson Public Schools, where she attended Jim Hill High School and excelled as a standout forward and high scorer on the girls’ basketball team. She later transferred to Polytechnic High School in San Francisco, California, where she continued to shine—serving as business manager of the yearbook staff and graduating with honors. Velma pursued higher education at Jackson State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education. She remained a devoted Tiger fan throughout her life.
Velma’s professional journey began in Bradenton, Florida, and continued in Yazoo City, Mississippi, where she taught at N.D. Taylor High School. In 1969, she led the girls’ basketball team to a State Championship, marking the beginning of a distinguished career in education. She served the Yazoo City School District for over two decades, earning respect as a dedicated teacher and mentor.
Her spiritual journey was equally rich. While in Yazoo City, Velma was a faithful member of Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church. Upon retirement, she returned to Jackson, Mississippi, and rejoined her religious roots at Greater Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend John E. Cameron Sr. A lifelong servant of Christ, Velma held several roles in the church, including President of the WP Whitfield Circle of Love, member of the Shepherd Club, and deaconess board member.
Velma’s commitment to service extended beyond the classroom and church. As a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Phi Mu Omega Chapter, and actively served the Jackson community through numerous civic initiatives. Her dedication to sisterhood and service was a reflection of her grace and generosity.
Above all, Velma’s greatest joy was her family. She leaves behind her devoted husband of 58 years, Marcus Dilworth Sr., and her beloved sons, Marcus Dilworth Jr. (Tomasinia) of Spring, TX, and Melvin Dilworth Sr. of Jackson, MS. Her legacy continues through her six grandchildren: Marcus-Paul (Rosalinda), Melvin Jr. (Indigo), Matthew, Lindsey Rose, Morgan, and Bella Grace Dilworth; and six great-grandchildren: Ali, Amari, Issan, Malyk Dilworth, and Carlos and Sophia Acosta.
She is also survived by her loving sisters, Grace Bell (William) and Emma Wilson (Frank); her sister-in-law, Cornelius Thompson; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and cherished friends.
Velma C. Dilworth’s life was a radiant testament to faith, family, and service. Her memory will forever shine in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
