Velma's Obituary

Velma Jo Thale, age 95, formerly of Shelbina, Missouri and Quincy, Illinois, passed away Friday, April 26, 2019 at The Bluffs, in Columbia, Missouri surrounded by her loving granddaughters.

She was born on August 19, 1923, in Mexico, Missouri, the daughter of James Lafe and Mary (Finnegan) Hickman. She was united in marriage to Charlie Thale on May 10, 1996 in Quincy, Illinois. She found happiness in Charlie who was the love of her life. He preceded her in death on August 1, 2012.

Velma was a member of the Shelbina Garden Club, Bridge Club in Quincy and Shelbina, and attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Shelbina, as well as, St. Peter’s Catholic Church of Quincy. She loved Christmas and enjoyed decorating for the season. One of her best memories was when she was in Rome and attended a mass with the Pope. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, quilting, and cooking. Most of all, she loved spending time with her granddaughters, great-grandchild, and friends.

She is survived by her two daughters from a previous marriage, Mary Jane Kraska of St. Charles, Missouri, and Barbara Jo Landrum and husband Jim of Shelbina, Missouri; grandchildren, Cynthia O’Bryan, Deborah Gast and husband Mark, Angela Anderson and husband Brian, Curt Landrum, and Chris Landrum; one great grandchild, Garrett Anderson; two brothers, Bernard Hickman and his wife Dorothy, and Lloyd Hickman and his wife Emily; and one sister, Mary Francis Robey and her husband Ira.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter, Glenda Sue Bradbury; and two great grandchildren, Alexandra and Brayden Anderson.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at 12 pm at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Shelbina, Missouri. A visitation will precede the service starting at 11 am at the Greening-Eagan-Hayes Funeral Home in Shelbina, Missouri. Burial will be held in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, in Shelbina, Missouri. Memorials may be made to the Electric Shock Drowning Prevention Association in her memory and in honor of Alexandra and Brayden Anderson.
