I love you always have my beautiful niece Verna. We had great times playing in the basement and making up dance routines, you ,DeeDee, ChyAnn and I. Spending nights together and yelling at Kevin for bothering us. We was planning to spend our 60th birthdays together and now your gone. I wish I had spent more grown up time with you and the family. I wish you had visited me here in Dallas, Texas. I will miss you terribly my niece and my friend, take your rest and I will see you again someday....

Sorry for your loss

We talked and finally connected for our 40th class reunion! We had a ball! We went to Jamaica, BAM! Had a ball...again. Verna had I known, September 14, 2025, would have been my last time seeing you. I would've hugged you a little tighter, talked a little longer and laughed a little louder. You had an infectious smile, joyful laugh and loving heart. You are truly missed. My sincere condolences to your children, family and the class of 84. Another flower for HIS garden.

Verna's Obituary

Verna Therese Jones- Henderson affectionally known to all as “Verna J” was born on February 12, 1966, to Joe Jones and Merry Wade.  Verna transitioned from her earthly vessel on September 26, 2025.

Affectionately called Verna J, a product of the Gary Community School System, graduating in 1984 from Horace Mann High School where she excelled academically as well as in Track & Field, Volleyball and Basketball.  

Verna attended Indiana State University on a track and field scholarship, graduating with a Bachelors in Accounting.  She also became a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.  

Verna’s career started as an accountant for Moo & Oink.  As she has had several positions in her career, her last position was a Sr. Accountant for Mr. Christmas.

Verna committed her life to the Lord at an early age.  Deeply rooted in her faith, she was an active member of New Community Church in Hammond, In.  During her earthly journey, Verna resided in Indiana, Colorado, Florida, Ohio and Maryland.  It was in Maryland that Verna put her faith in action volunteering her time with the Earleigh Heights Volunteer Fire Company.

A ray of light, and a heart of gold, Verna was always putting others before herself.  She had an unconditional love for life.  Her greatest joy was to take her children, nieces and nephews on family vacations.  Verna loved music, dancing and traveling, always stating she was going to retire in Tampa, Florida.  Her favorite pastime was playing bingo.  In true fashion, Verna loved life unconditionally until the very end of her earthly journey as she was an organ donor.  Her bright light was gifted to a 71-year-old male in New York, a 48-year-old male in Pennsylvania, a 35-year-old female in Georgia, and a 63-year-old male in Virginia.  Her love is also gifted several burn victims and women who have had mastectomy’s.

Verna is preceded in death by her father, Joe Jones, Sr.; and her brother, Joe Jones Jr. She leaves behind loving memories with her children: James “Jamie” Ervin, II, DeJa Victoria Henderson, mother, Merry M. Wade, sisters: DeEdra Jones, Katie Kinchen, Camilla Harris and Lataunya Davis; brothers: Kevin Jones, Craig Hutton and Shean West; five nephews: Kevin II., Parrish II, D’Angelo, Jalen and Jeremy; two nieces: Sharon and Brianna; one great niece, Paris and two great nephews: London and Zaahir and  a host of extended family members and friends.
