Verner H. Ohst, age 88, a resident of Wheaton, IL, was called home to the Lord on Saturday, November 3, 2018, at River Glen Assisted Living in St. Charles, IL. He was born March 10, 1930 in Mason County, MI.Vern was born and raised on the family farm near Ludington, Michigan. He went on to attend Michigan State, receiving a BA in Industrial Arts/Woodworking and then a Masters degree in Education. After graduation, he proudly served in the US Army Signal Corps in Metz, France. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1954 and moved to the Chicago area to begin a 30+ year career as a high school teacher and administrator.In 1963, he married the love of his life, Nina Philips. They met at the Oak Park Ski Club, sharing a love of skiing and travel. Together, they raised three beloved children in the Wheaton area.Vern was a warm and caring man who was known to make friends at lines in airports, the post office, or most any place he had chance to strike up a conversation. He deeply appreciated that life was about relationships and experiences, not money and material things. He was generous with his time, particularly over a game of cards with family. Win or lose — and he liked to say he won more than he lost — he always had a smile on his face.He was very proud of his service to his country and a highlight for him in recent years was an Honor Flight to Washington D.C.Vern was a lifelong Cubs fan and took great delight in watching them win the World Series.He is survived by his three children, Philip Ohst of Oakland, CA, Andrew (Janeth) Ohst of Naperville, IL Carolyn (Chad) Jerdee of St. Charles, IL; his four grandchildren, Kyla, Erik, Anna and Sarah; and his siblings, Gerald (Char) Ohst and Patricia (Dave) Batzer.He was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Nina; and his sister, Virginia Lipps.A visitation will be held Wednesday, November 7, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., in Wheaton, IL. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 8, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Peace Lutheran Church, 21W500 Butterfield Road, in Lombard.
