Vernon's Obituary

Mr. Vernon Lee Landry, Sr., 76, the second son of seven children of Walter Landry and Vida Mae Labeaux-Landry, was born July 25, 1947, in Beaumont, Texas.

Vernon departed this life on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston, Texas.

Vernon began his spiritual life at Our Mother of Mercy Catholic Church, Beaumont, Texas. He graduated from Hebert High School in 1965.

Vernon enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he distinguished himself as an Aircraft Mechanic with the 22nd Tactical Air Support Squadron. Sgt. Landry proudly received the “U.S. Air Force Commendation Medal” for meritorious service in Vietnam while at Kelly AFB, Texas. He then served with the 19th Military Airlift Squadron, a unit of the Military Airlift Wing that provided global airlift for military forces. Vernon stated, “That was the most important thing ever to be in my service life!”

After returning home from serving his country, Vernon was hired at Exxon Mobil, his first job, and obtained a position as a Welder/1st Class Layer Out Specialist. He retired after many years due to his declining health.

He loved to utilize his mechanical and constructive knowledge when he self-constructed a loving home for his family in Cheek, Texas. He enjoyed traveling and all outdoor activities, including horseback riding, four-wheeling, fishing, and operating tractor/trailers. An avid Jazz and Blues musician, Vernon played the harmonica and electric guitar proficiently.

Vernon was very humorous, optimistic, resourceful, and loving. He embraced the motto “Never Let Life Beat You,” guiding his enthusiastic living approach.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Harold Landry, and his sister, Carolyn Raven.

Vernon is survived by his wife, Ethel Carr; his son, Vernon Lee Landry, Jr.; his daughters, Brandy Winstead (Mark), twins, Stacy Landry and Tracy Landry; and three grandchildren. Additionally, he is survived by his stepchildren, Sherry Traylor and Frances “Wayne” Carr, and two step-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

Vernon’s memory will remain in the hearts of his sisters, Walterine Johnson (LeRoy), Viola Freeman, and Shirley Johnson; his brother, Charles Landry (Lou Anna); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and all who knew him, and his legacy of service, family devotion, and love for life will continue to inspire.
