VEVE ELIZABETH DOUGLASS L’ENGLE, aged 82, passed peacefully from this life to be with her Savior on Friday, Dec. 22, 2017. She was at home, as she desired to be, with her family when she died.
She is survived by her loving husband of more than 58 years, John Claude L’Engle of Vero Beach; her daughters Claudia Hafling (J. Michael) of Port St. Lucie; Catherine Rorick of Lake Worth; Claire Jessup (Todd) of Sebastian; and Carolyn Gutierrez (Steven) of Palm Beach Gardens.
Veve was born the daughter of Albert Douglass and Jessie Sandlin Douglass, of Lake City and Jacksonville. She met her husband, Claude, in Jacksonville in 1958, and they married on March 7, 1959 at First Presbyterian Church of Lake City, FL.
They made their home in Jacksonville and remained there until 1971, when they moved to Lake Worth. Later homes included Orlando and her present residence in Vero Beach.
A full-time housewife and mother and a longtime volunteer with such organizations as the Girl Scouts of America, American Heart Association, and most recently the Humane Society, Veve had a kind and giving heart and great compassion for those in need. In Indian River County, she and her husband had become supporters of Epic Missions, Inc., and other Christian and civic charities.
In addition to her daughters and husband, she is also survived by her very dear and devoted sister, Dorothy Douglass Cathey (Robert) of Jacksonville; brother David Douglass (Joyce) of Ft. Pierce; grandchildren Christopher Hafling, Jessica and Jamie Rorick, Shannon Jessup and Elizabeth Bolen; stepgrandchildren Jennifer Hafling, Brittany, Bianca and Chris Gutierrez; great grandson Justin Rorick; sisterin-law Harriet L’Engle (Bonnie Coons); nieces, nephews and many dear friends. She was pre-deceased by her brother Wiley Cone Douglass and granddaughter Jacquelyn Marie Rorick.
Funeral services will be held in Vero Beach on Wednesday, December 27, at 11 a.m., at Strunk Funeral Home, with a small graveside service following.
