Walter R. Winston 92, passed away peacefully at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune, NJ on Thursday, November 2nd.Walter was born to late Clifford and Mary (Oprisko) Winston in Binghamton, NY on September 27,1931. He grew up and attended school in Binghamton as well. In 1954 he joined the United States Army. In the early years of his military career he was stationed in Iceland where he taught himself to knit and collected pet rocks because there was nothing else to do. He then married his late wife Yvonne J. West-Winston in 1956. They started their family and were stationed in places such Fort Dix, NJ, Maine, Massachusetts, Germany and his final station was Fort Monmouth in Eatontown, NJ where he retired in 1971 as an E7 sergeant. After retiring from the Army he worked for the Asbury Park postal service from 1971-1992 as a postal carrier in Wanamassa, NJ. He walked 14 miles a day delivering the mail and especially enjoyed all of the dogs on his route which he kept biscuits for.In his spare time he enjoyed being a member of several bowling leagues with his friends and old army colleagues. He was a lifetime member of the Asbury Park-Wall Elks and the American Legion. Walter loved camping with his children and grand children every summer. He would teach everyone how to build a fire the proper way and take his grandchildren on nature walks where he would show them how to collect firewood and hunt for salamanders. Walter had a huge family that he was so proud of. He leaves behind his three children April Winston-Anton of Canton, NY, Walter Winston, Jr of Neptune and William Winston of Carneys Point, NJ. He was pre-deceased by his youngest son Robert J. Winston formerly of Howell, NJ.Walter was the best Grandpa/Tata and leaves behind 10 grandchildren, Susan Winston, Richard Winston, Brandi Winston, Christina Winston-Adams, Michelle Doring, Andrea Doring, Amy Winston-O’Neill, Rebecca Winston, Abigail Winston and Melissa Winston. He was also very proud to have so many great children and his face would just light up with such joy seeing all of the small children running around the house. He leaves behind 11 great-grandchildren, Nasim Abdullah, Jaden Doring, Allison Winston, Jamal Abdullah, Nicholas Winston, Isabella Winston, Colin Taillon, Oliver Adams, Avery Winston and Emily O’Neill.Walter loved his huge family and spending time with everyone was one of the biggest joys of his life. He was always such a rock for his children as well his grandchildren and taught them all that if you work hard and do your best to be a good person that’s all he could ask for.  His work ethic and dedication to family were the characteristics that he has passed down and will remain with all of the Winston’s for decades to come. He could be stern at times but if any one of his family or loved ones was in need he could come to the rescue in a heartbeat. He was just an all around wonderful person and will forever be missed.
