Lt. Colonel (Ret.) Warren Edward Clarke, known as Pat, of Audubon, Pennsylvania, passed away on November 5, 2025, due to pneumonia, surrounded by his wife, Linda, children, and their spouses. He passed just four days prior to his 62nd wedding anniversary.Pat was born on May 1, 1941, in Fort Bragg, NC, to Isabel and Lt. General Frederick James Clarke. Pat spent his childhood on military bases around the world with his sisters, Isabel Stevens and Nancy Clarke. His parents and beloved aunt, Helen Van Slyke, established the core of the family’s belief system, built around honesty, kindness, equality, and fairness. He worked hard to ensure this code of honor was passed on to his children and grandchildren.In 1959, Pat began his studies at Yale University, where he was simultaneously enrolled in R.O.T.C. At Yale, his love of knowledge and sense of humor were always at play. It was during this time that Pat met the love of his life, Linda Louise Hughes. He first met Linda at a dance, where he failed multiple times to cut in. They met again at a mixer at Vassar - a mixer he left to join Linda at an opera; he was clearly smitten. He graduated cum laude from Yale with an M.S. in Engineering, winning the Wohlenberg Prize for an outstanding senior in the field of engineering or physical sciences. Pat joined as an officer in the Army Corps of Engineers and soon after married his sweetheart, Linda, on November 9, 1963.Linda and Pat welcomed three children into the world: Jennifer Hitt (husband Lorin), Fred (wife Ann), and Timothy (wife Jen). Pat’s military career started in Fort Benning, GA, followed by tours in Mali, Germany, and Vietnam. In his final years of active service, he received an MBA from Harvard Business School and then taught economics at West Point. While he remained in the Army Reserves, Pat moved to the private sector, where he was a strategy executive in Westport, CT, and a consultant in Boston, MA. He became a diehard Red Sox, Celtics, and Patriots fan - a passion he brought with him when he and Linda moved to the Shannondell residences in Audubon, PA.Throughout all of this, Pat considered his favorite and most important role to be that of a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Pat was a constant presence in his kids’ lives, serving in numerous volunteer roles, including as a coach and scout leader. When a volunteer was needed, Pat never failed to step in. He prided himself on being fair and even-handed and believed in providing equal opportunities to every kid. This belief went far beyond coaching and scouts and was represented in the way he lived his life. He believed all people are equal and hated discrimination of any kind.Despite all the different places they lived, it was an old house in Gilmanton, NH, that held the first place in his heart. He loved sitting on the porch reading a book on quiet summer evenings and getting together with friends. He enjoyed debating everything from politics to history with his friends, even delving into Gilmanton’s past and writing extensively on the topic. Trips to Loon Pond rounded out the experience. It was also there that he spent the most time with his grandchildren, who lovingly knew him as GrandPat. The seven grandkids (Andrew, Colin, Sarah, Isabella, Matthew, Lucas, and Calvin) each had a special and unique relationship with GrandPat, and he shaped the time they spent together based on the activities each child liked most.Of all the things Pat did in life, it was the love, kindness, and respect he shared with others that truly defined him - that, and his love for his family and his beloved wife, as there was no Pat without Linda.
