Wayne's Obituary

Sterling-Wayne J. Grinkis, 82, died Wednesday, October 8, 2025, at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester. He is survived by his loving wife, Carol Stewart-Grinkis; son, Sean Bean; brother, Dave Grinkis; sisters, Gayle Dudra and Jean Elsaessar; four grandchildren, Dylan, Nate, Kirsten, and Tyree; seven great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his brother, Ronald Grinkis. 

Wayne was born in Fitchburg, the son of Joseph & Marguerite “Peg” (Herrick) Grinkis. Raised on Rugg Road in Sterling, Wayne was a gifted student athlete and graduate of Wachusett Regional High School, Class of 1961. From there he went on to complete his Associate’s degree. Wayne successfully owned and operated WJG Painting in Sterling for 25 years. Previously working for several companies such as Reed Rolled Thread in Clinton, Arrow Comp in W. Boylston, John Grinkis Insurance in Sterling, and O'Sullivan Painting in Groton. An avid sports enthusiast, Wayne enjoyed 47 years as an official referee for high school youth football and boys and girls basketball. He was a coach and sponsor for the Leominster men’s local softball league, taking the team to playoffs in Birmingham, AL. Wayne was also a lifeguard and instructor at Lake Waushacum, Sterling. He was an avid golfer and founding member at Sterling Country Club and a patron friend to many at the Gazbar, a family sports bar in Leominster. Most importantly, he was an unforgettable character and host among family and friends. He will be forever missed and remembered lovingly as a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle and brother; a dedicated coach and remarkable friend.
