Mrs. Whitfield paved the way for so many children and families in Williamsburg, Georgetown, and Horry Counties. She successfully operated the Waccamaw EOC Head Start/ Early Head Start Program for more than forty years. She showed respect, trust, integrity, and empathy and always put others first. It was an honor to work for Mrs. Whitfield for many years. I will truly miss her. Please accept my deepest condolences for the loss of your mother, sister, grandmother, aunt, cousin, and friend....

LIFE REFLECTIONS
For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that loves his appearing. II Timothy 4:6-8
Wilhelmina B. Whitfield, the daughter of the late Deacon James Boykin and Sister Nancy Nelson Boykin, was born in Williamsburg County on Sunday, November 19, 1944. She departed this earthly life on Sunday, April 3, 2022 at McLeod Regional Medical Center of the Pee Dee in Florence, SC. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Whitfield; two sisters, Magdelena McClam and Mary B. Page; and one brother, Joe Nell Boykin.
Wilhelmina accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Savior at an early age and was a lifelong member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in Salters, SC. During that time she served as Church Financial Secretary for many years, member of the Usher Board, Church By-Laws Committee and the Rebuilding Committee.
Wilhelmina received her formal education from the Williamsburg County Public School System and is a graduate of Tomlinson High School Class of 1963 in Kingstree, SC. She is also a graduate of Benedict College in Columbia, SC. She furthered her education at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC and Fisk University in Nashville, TN.
Wilhelmina’s involvement with the community and lives of children was an essential part of her life. She was a devout believer in the pursuit of higher education, taking care of people and independency. She started her illustrious career in education, after finishing college, as a young teacher at Dillon High School in Dillion, SC. She spent the next 40+ years as the Director of the Head Start Program for Waccamaw EOC, Inc. (which included Horry, Georgetown and Williamsburg Counties) where she championed the importance of education and the development of our youth. During her tenure with the Head Start Program, she was honored with many awards and was recognized throughout the local, regional and national levels for her leadership skills and dedication to her task. This is also where she met and established lifelong friendships with her dedicated team of teams. She was also an active member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., where she encouraged young ladies to participate in network development and social growth while living their motto of “Exemplifying Excellence Through Sustainable Service.”
Wilhelmina was united in holy matrimony to Thomas Whitfield in September, 1969. From this union came the blessing of three sons.
Wilhelmina, affectionately called “Mickey”, leaves behind a loving and devoted family to cherish her memories: three sons, Terrence (Mary) Whitfield and Marc K. Whitfield (Sherrell R. Cue), both of Kingstree, SC and Thomas (Marilynn) Whitfield II of Fayetteville, NC; eighteen grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bennie (Normandine) Boykin of Greeleyville, SC and Bobby Boykin of Salters, SC; a sister, Janie Mae Venable of Boston, MA; five sisters-in-law, MaeBelle Boykin of Greeleyville, SC, Dianne Whitfield, Lula Mae Whitfield and Deborah (David) Covert, all of Salters, SC and Leler Ferrell of Maryland; several aunts and uncles; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
