William E. Banwell

William E. Banwell, age 87, of Virgil, NY passed away Monday, March 18, 2019 at Cortland Regional Medical Center. Bill was born December 1, 1931, son of the late Ester Vanetta and Demetrius Banwell.He went to work at Smith Corona until he enlisted in the Army in 1950. He became a Sergeant of the 82nd Airborne, troop E, as an infantry paratrooper and served as a combat vet in the Korean War. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1953 and returned to work at Smith Corona where he retired. He was also a Volunteer Boy Scout leader and Volunteer Fireman for the Virgil Fire Dept. in the late 60’s. He enjoyed the outdoors, riding his motorcycle and kayaking.He is survived by his children, Glenn (Julie) and Veronica (Angelo), his grandchildren, Gage, Emily, Angela and Anthony; along with a surviving sister, aunt and several nieces and nephews.There are no services scheduled at this time, the family will hold a private service at a later date.
