William Kyger Obituary

William Holmes Kyger, 90, of Broadway/Timberville, passed away Saturday, September 26, 2015 at Brookdale Assisted Living in Harrisonburg. Bill was the son of the late Roy and Lucy Dean Kyger, and the grandson of the late Jacob Christian Kyger; the first mayor of Elkton and a Confederate veteran who fought in the Battle of New Market Gap.

On June 7, 1952, he married Dorothy Blosser Kyger and together they have three sons, David Kyger and wife Pirjo, of Fulks Run, Timothy Kyger and wife, Norma, of Timberville, and Thomas Kyger of Nokesville. They have two daughters, Jane Bompiani and husband, Larry, of New Market, and Sue Corbett and husband Steve, of Nokesville. They also have thirteen grandchildren, two great-granddaughters, and a special nephew, Jim Rhine of Timberville.

Bill was preceded in death by his brothers, Howard, Joseph and Archie; a decorated pilot in WWII. He also had two sisters, Anna Rhine and Dora Jenkins.

Bill was the first Eagle Scout of Elkton and a Scout Master in Dayton for seven years. Serving in the Army Air Corps in WWII, Bill was a radio-gunner on B-17 and B-29 bombers. He served one year in Panama as Officer in Charge of a radar unit, protecting the Panama Canal. With a love for the Spanish language, he also served as a translator for church missions in Costa Rica and Puerto Rico.

In 1951, Bill graduated with honors from UVA, where he pitched for the baseball team and was a member of Sigma Delta Psi Athletic Fraternity. Bill taught Spanish and English at Dayton High School, Turner Ashby High School, and Broadway High School. During his thirty nine years of teaching he was a baseball and basketball coach who led teams in both sports to State Championships and was the first coach of TA to have an undefeated team. In addition, he was a pitcher for the Elkton Valley League, the Shenandoah Indians of Massanutten League, and the Dayton County League.

Bill was a member of the Linville Creek Church of the Brethren, where he served as a deacon and was Chairman of the Board for one term.

After retiring from education, he spent time beef farming and gardening on his Shenandoah River farm. He was an avid hiker and hunter, and especially enjoyed bow hunting.

The body was cremated and a memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at the Broadway Baptists Church, PO Box 365, Broadway, VA 22815. Condolences may be sent to the family by visiting www.kygers.com.

I was so sorry to hear about Mr. Kyger's passing. He was my scoutmaster at old Troop 62 in Dayton in the early '60's. He took us camping at Camp Shenandoah, at Round Hill, hiking, etc. They were some of the most fun times of my youth. I know a lot of Dayton scouts remember him fondly.

The Valley has lost one of it's best citizens. He was an interesting fellow who had a special smile and always with a sparkle in his eyes. He and Dot raised three exceptional sons and two exceptionally beautiful daughters. Ed and I are proud to have known the family and called them our friends for nearly fifty years. Rest in Peace our dear friend Bill. You will be missed.

My prayers and condolences go to the Kyger family. Heaven gained a great man and we on earth were lucky enough to have shared time with him. He had a way of looking at you that said I know what you are up too and its ok but I am watching you. Then the famous grin. What a great guy. May memories bring you peace and know that all that came into contact with him were blessed. God bless you all.

Mr. Kyger was my Spanish teacher at Broadway High... I still quote him saying "Someday soon, we will wish we all knew Spanish, and spoke it well. It may well be the difference between how well you're paid, and you'll remember me telling you this." He lived to see his prophecy come to fruition. Foreign languages are not my strong suit, but what I have retained is due to the diligence of his teaching methods. Thanks Mr. Kyger for your instruction. I am able to communicate without totally embarrassing myself, thanks to your efforts. My best to your family at this time.
