Willie's Obituary

Willie C. DeJarnette, Jr., of West Chester, Pennsylvania, was called home on January 25, 2017 at the age of 77.

Willie, known as Billy or “Sweet Willie De” to many family and friends, was born in Chester, Pennsylvania, on November 11, 1939. He was the son of the late Sara and Willie C. DeJarnette, Sr.

Willie graduated from Chester High School in 1958 and from Delaware State College in 1962. He worked as a teacher in Lancaster for a short time before returning to the Chester Upland School District as a teacher, then an administrator, and finally retiring as the Principal of Columbus Elementary School. Willie will also be fondly remembered as the Assistant Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Chester, where he worked for many, many years.

Willie, like his father before him, was more dedicated to the people of Chester than can be simply stated. Throughout his years of service in the Chester Upland School District, Willie constantly enforced and exemplified the value of education as a means for people to do anything they wanted in life. As the Assistant Director of the Boys and Girls Club, he was able to extend his reach and his message throughout the city of Chester and touch literally countless lives, serving as friend, role model, and father to generations of people.

Willie enjoyed sports, jazz music, and studying history in his spare time.  An avid historian, Willie collected books, movies and documentaries, and any learning materials he could use to pass knowledge along to the many youths he touched.  He will always be remembered for his big, quick smile, sharp sense of humor, and friendly, easy-going nature.

He is survived by daughter, Sharon DeJarnette; sons, Dwayne DeJarnette and Justin DeJarnette;   four grandchildren, Shanone DeJarnette-Foster, with whom she share a special bond, Dwayne DeJarnette, Jr., Maxwell DeJarnette and Mia DeJarnette; five great grandchildren; one great grandchild; sister, Wanda DeJarnette Gay; aunts, Mattie Bembury and Lillian Brown, and a host of relatives and friends.

Both of his parents, his sister, Maxine Chandler, and brother, Joseph DeJarnette, who spent two days with us, predeceased Willie.
