Mr. Hammonds was a true gentleman, and a Leader, let me share with you my reasons why:
1).You never started a conversation with him without first saying "good morning, good evening, or good day to you Sir or Miss". Once you got past that, you could then speak about whatever issue was concerning you. 2). He was a firm believer in common courtesy's like Thank-you, Please, & Excuse me (sir or miss). Willie's Obituary

On Friday morning, on June 8, 2012 at 2:50 A.M. at the Alive Hospice Center the very well respected Willie Henderson Hammonds Sr passed through this life. Willie Henderson Hammonds Sr. was born in Toney, Alabama, the only child of Alfred and Ellisea Hammonds; at the early age of five he came to live in Nashville, Tennessee and made it his home. He attended public School and graduated from Pearl High School and afterward he attended College at Tennessee State University. On May 2, 1947 he married the late Margaret Minnie Elizabeth Kelsoe,(August 6, 2001) of Nashville, Tennessee and from this union they were blessed with six children, (Margie Ann, Dorenda Marie, Sandra Arlette, Willie H, Jr, James Alfred Sr and Claude Ellis Sr). In his early years he was employed with Batson Grocery Store and worked with his father and Uncle in Masonry industry. He later started his own upholstery business before transition into management arena, becoming the property manager for Schatten & Cypress Properties Inc. He later took his beloved job as facility management and Supervisor at Meharry Medical College, Where he retired after more than 30 years of services. He was a faithful member of Kayne Avenue Baptist Church for most of his life time until failing health. He served as a Sunday School Teacher, Baptist Youth Training Unit (BYTU) Superintendant as well as a member of the Deacon Board. During his life he enjoyed working with his hands in many facets, fixing and repair most anything; cooking and baking, and a great love of reading and spending time with his family.

He leaves to cherish his memory daughters: Margie Ann, Dorenda Marie (James) Cheeks, Sandra Arlette (Warren Jr.) Lawson; Sons Willie Henderson Jr, James Alfred Sr (Deborah) and Claude Ellis Sr. 29 Grandchildren, 40 Great Grandchildren other numerous nieces and nephew, sister-in-Law Bettie Hazel Kinnard and devoted family friends Jacqueline Larkin and Savington & Gail Nickens as well as a host of other relatives and friends.
