Winnie's Obituary

Winnie Mauryne Deadrick Grigsby was born on January 25, 1930, in Palacios, Texas, to Lawrence Desoto and Myrtle Shannon Deadrick. The only girl among four brothers who absolutely adored her, she grew up surrounded by affection, protection, and deep family love.

Winnie received Christ at the age of nine, beginning a lifelong devotion to faith and service that shaped every season of her life. She later married the love of her life, Donald Grigsby, and together they raised four children in Port Lavaca, Texas. Winnie poured her whole heart into creating a home built on faith, encouragement, and compassion. She instilled in her children a firm foundation in Christ, supported their many activities, and modeled a life of service both in church and in the community. She began her nursing career at Champ Traylor Memorial Hospital, specializing in labor and delivery. She delighted in sharing humorous and heartwarming stories from the delivery room— She loved providing support for women in labor and helping them adjust to instant motherhood. She was known  for her skill in drawing blood; colleagues often remarked that she could get “the perfect stick” every time. Her nursing career took her to the Palacios Hospital, several Houston-area hospitals, and various senior living centers before she ultimately retired from Autumn Hills Nursing Center in Sugar Land, Texas.

After retirement—and following the restoration of the family homestead—Winnie returned to her beloved hometown of Palacios. These years proved to be some of the sweetest and most fulfilling of her life. She treasured time spent with her brothers, Larry and Clyde, and became an active member of the local senior center, enjoying day trips across Texas. She faithfully attended the West Palacios Church of God of Prophecy, participating in Bible study, seasonal events, and joyfully helping prepare for the Church Mission Breakfast several times a year.

A special blessing during this season was the return of her Aunt Dora Lewis to Texas. Together they shared countless adventures—strolling along the bay, attending  women’s retreats, state conventions, playing bingo, and taking spontaneous day trips to Victoria, Galveston, and nearby towns. Their companionship filled Winnie’s days with laughter, comfort, and joy.

Winnie lived a vibrant life. She was an avid reader, a devoted traveler, and a gifted seamstress who ensured her children were always well dressed for school, church, and special occasions. A talented pianist with an exceptional ear, she was often called upon to accompany singers. After hearing only a few bars of music, she could effortlessly pick up the tune and create beautiful accompaniment.

As a devoted member of the Church of God of Prophecy, Winnie lived her faith both publicly and privately. She served faithfully as a clerk, pianist, and volunteer in various ministries and was a spiritual anchor for her children and grandchildren.

Winnie was also a wonderful cook who loved preparing special dishes for work functions, church events, and family gatherings. Her German Chocolate Cake was unmatched, and her pound cakes were legendary. She served her community in countless ways—acting as a Cub Scout Den Mother, volunteering with the Sunlight Girls Club, and participating in activities sponsored by her workplaces.

Above all, Winnie cherished her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her unconditional love, acceptance, and gentle guidance shaped their lives in immeasurable ways. When her need for support grew, it was her grandchildren and her first great-grandchild who surrounded her with steadfast care—her “cocoon of protected love.” She was an extraordinary woman whose presence lit every room, and her legacy lives on through all those she touched.

Winnie is preceded in death by her husband, Donald Lee Grigsby; her son, Courtney Lee Grigsby; her parents, Lawrence De Soto Deadrick and Myrtle Shannon Deadrick; and her brothers Eugene Lawrence Deadrick (and wife Bernice), L.D. Deadrick, Larry Deadrick, and Clyde Deadrick.

She leaves to cherish her memory her children Dawn Broussard (Robert), Jeri Cook, and Guy Grigsby (Jeana); grandchildren Shannon Grigsby, Cassye Cook Provost (Gerome), and Courtney Lee Grigsby (Taylor); great-grandchildren Nicolas Spenser Grigsby, Dominise Richardson, Brittney Grigsby, and Ryan Lee Grigsby; great-great-grandchild Draylin Lee Bracy; along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. A memorial will take place on Saturday, November 29, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at  the Palacios Recreation Center, 2401 Perryman Avenue, Palacios, Texas 77465.
