Lynn and I worked together for 2 years at Kitsap Lake Elementary in Bremerton. We were next door classroom neighbors..I remember her sticking her head in my classroom after school one day, needing help zipping up her dress, as she had a practice interview for an administrative job later that day...and showing off the Kuerig her kids had given her for Christmas, gleefully saying, Look , it even foams the chai! She was an interventionist, and I was a Special Ed. teacher, which occasionally meant our lunch was interrupted or later in the day. Some days she would share stories about her own kids...which I wont embarrass them with now, and some wild stories from when she worked at a KOA in Montana. One day our tech teacher was in the staff room as well, and he innocently asked if wed seen the Screaming Goats video. Neither of us had. Within a few minutes hed pulled up the video and we were laughing so hard Im surprised none of us peed in our pants!
Lynn led a Professional Learning Community in our building on Compassionate Schools. This was years before Trauma Informed practices became the norm. This class was a real gateway for many of us, understanding what childhood trauma is, and how it impacts a students brain development and ability to learn.
Lynns support didnt just stop with the students. She was very direct with a few parents, pointing out that their behaviors were impacting their childs behavior. I was struggling in a position that very few are successful at. She met with me one afternoon, and directly said, How is that self care going? Needless to say, it wasnt, and her directness was a wakeup call.
I last saw Lynn the summer she had moved to Marysville. We had a lovely dinner, and she showed me her beautiful home on Camano Island. She was all aglow with her new job, new home and new opportunities.
Lynn was a remarkable person, and Im glad I knew her.
