Robert Newell

Robert C. Newell Robert Calvin Newell died at home on August 27, 2016 at the age of eighty-eight. He and his wife, Irene Ann Newell (Launhardt) were married on August 27, 1955 in Collinsville, Illinois and they are very thankful for their sixty-one years together. They have chosen to follow Jesus Christ all of their days and their faith has influenced family and friends. Robert was called Bob by most people. He was born January 24, 1928 in Los Angeles, California, the son of Ralph and Maize (Doty) Newell. He graduated from Stanford University in 1950 with a BA & MA in Education. He taught and coached in California until going to medical school. He graduated with the class of 1957 from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri. He completed his otolaryngology residency at the University of Illinois in Chicago. He was in the U.S. Army Medical Corps and retired from the reserves as a colonel. In 1971, the Newell family moved to Bellingham, Washington where Bob was an ENT doctor and a head and neck surgeon until his retirement in 1993. He was an avid skier, sail boat racer and golfer. He also played racquetball and was a member of the Bellingham Bay Rotary Club. Family was very important to him he was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He served as an elder and was active in a church community throughout his life. He and Irene are members of Christ Church Bellingham. He was preceded in death by his grandson Maxwell Scott Davis. He is survived by his wife Irene, sons Dan (married to Betsy) and Chris (married to Astrid) and daughters Sharon Collander (married to Magnus), Corrine Davis (married to Scott) and Andrea Greenfield (married to Jim). Bob has thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. We will all miss him. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 24th at 2:00pm at Christ Church Bellingham, 2826 Birchwood Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ Church Bellingham.
