Lucy Doane Obituary

Lucy H. Doane

1908-2010 NAHANT, MA Lucy H. Doane, 101, artist and teacher, passed away on Saturday, May 22, 2010, at a local nursing home.

At 101 years she had the distinction of being the town's oldest resident and had enjoyed being the recipient of the Boston Post Cane denoting that honor several years ago.

Lucy Doane, the daughter of Sidney T. and Faye Wilson Doane, was born in Nahant on Dec. 22, 1908. She attended Nahant public schools and graduated from Lynn Classical High School in 1925.

Revealing her artistic abilities at an early age, she pursued her calling in that field and received her B.S. degree at the Mass. College of Art in 1929, her MFA from Teachers College, Columbia University and did further study abroad at the Netherlands Institute of History and Art.

She taught art for several years at Keene Teachers' College in New Hampshire, and then become Director of Art in the public schools in Rutland, Vt., retiring from that position in 1971. An avid traveler, she enjoyed trips to Europe and Asia, getting inspiration for her paintings from visiting various historic sites and museums.

She then lived for a number of years in the Bennington, Vt., area where she was an active member of the Bennington Area Acts Council, the Southern Vermont Arts Center and the Bennington Museum. In 1991, she was honored by being made a fellow of the Vermont Academy of Arts and Sciences, in recognition of her "outstanding contribution to the cultural resources of the state."

Early in her career, Lucy Doane was known as an illustrator of children's books, but as time went on her interest shifted to painting the beautiful landscapes of Vermont as well as the ever-changing seascapes of the North Shore of Massachusetts. Her paintings were exhibited widely in New England and New York and many were purchased to become part of prestigious private and public collections including the National Gallery in Washington, D.C.

Returning to live in her hometown of Nahant in the late 1990s, Lucy remained active in the art field exhibiting her paintings at the Marblehead and Swampscott Art Associations.

The sister of the late Albert G. Doane of Swampscott, she leaves her sister, Calantha Doane Sears of Nahant, and also by many nieces and nephews, as well as their children and their children. Each generation thoroughly enjoyed their "Aunty Lu," not only for her artistic abilities, but also for her positive attitude to life, her love of nature, her quick wit and wry sense of humor.

Ms. Doane was a very special part of my education in Rutland. I always looked forward to art classes and her loving ways of making each student feel like an artist. She was my art teacher throughout grade school and then when I did my student teaching with Ms. Mumford, I had the privelege of working alongside of three of my grade school teachers: Ms. Mumford, Mrs. Carrigan, and Ms. Doane. We had great times reminiscing our early days together. They were my inspiration for teaching and caring for each individual child. Thank you, Ms. Doane, you made a difference in many lives! It is with a surge of fond memories that I write this in honor of a wonderful woman who made every student feel special.
Let us look to the heavens as Miss Doane will be adding color and highlighting the skies from now on.

Dear Miss Doane was a wonderful teacher. I had her for every year that I attended Park Street School in Rutland. We always looked forward to her day to visit and teach us about art. I was not very talented but she always made me feel that I could do a project whether I could or not. I enjoyed her and will never forget her.

With fond memories of Miss Doane's art classes at Park Street Elementary School in Rutland, Vt., I'll never forgot the one special lesson she taught me in second grade..."you never have a mistake... take that line and make something new of it"...one that I remembered and applied to life! I've treasured the one small sketch she made in my autograph book a few years latter when she signed it for me! She was a very special lady! My condolences to her family...we, her students, know what a treasure she was to you! Barbara Taylor Valentin (Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey)

Lucy Doane was my art teacher from 7th grade to 12th. I loved her class and made sure to sign up for it each year. She was supportive and a wonderful teacher, with a dry wit that was very welcome in class. I learned so much about art from this lady. Good travels, Lucy. (Class of '68)

When I was a pupil at Rutland's Dana School in the 1950s, Tuesday afternoons were reserved for art. I believe every kid in school looked eagerly forward to Miss Doane's arrival. There was never a lesson or exercise that she introduced that failed to grip us. She encouraged and coached every kid and every effort. We learned much, we grew, and we all owe a debt to Lucy Doane. May she rest well!

I have many memories from grade school all the way to high school of Ms Doane and her work. I am not particularly artistic but I enjoyed all she taught us.

I felt a surge of emotion at seeing Lucy Doane's name. I graduated from RHS in 1953 and had art lessons with Ms. Doane somewhere along the way at that time. She was an honorable and talented woman and she would be no doubt satisfied that I passed along my love of art to my son and daughter. God bless to her family.

Dear Mrs. Sears and Family,
Miss Doane was beloved in my family; a friend to my mother Louise Hadley Fiske, when they were both young in Rutland, and a much-appreciated art teacher to all four of the children. I wrote to Miss Doane in Nahant a few weeks ago and do hope she was able to read my note. Her life is a celebration. We all send you our condolences. Yours, Dr. Roberta Fiske-Rusciano

To the family of Ms Doane: I was her student at RHS until 1971, she was a safe oasis for a troubled young girl. She brought out my creative talents and displayed to me patience, understanding and compassion. One of few teachers that did, I remember her with the greatest of fondness. May you find comfort and peace knowing the lasting impression and legacy Ms Doane left in Rutland and in my heart.
