Richard Nunley Obituary

Richard W. Nunley

1931-2016 Richard Whitlock Nunley, born July 31, 1931, in Scituate, Massachusetts, died from a brain hemorrhage on March 3 in Portland, Oregon. Dick was a teacher, poet, cook, gardener, and lover of the natural world. Childhood mentors fostered a love of books and learning, which led Dick to Dartmouth College and Kings College Cambridge in England. There he met Susan Stroud, whom he married on December 19, 1965. They spent the majority of their lives together in New Lebanon, New York, where Dick was a teacher at Darrow School. They raised two daughters, Diana and Felicity, at their "Garden Hill" home, surrounded by flower and vegetable gardens with a spectacular view across Lebanon Valley. In 1970 Dick became a professor of English at Berkshire Community College in nearby Pittsfield, Massachusetts. An exacting teacher with high expectations for all, many former students credit him with changing the course of their lives. For 25 years beginning in 1980 Dick wrote a weekly "Our Berkshires" column for The Berkshire Eagle. His columns challenged readers to connect the dots between vignettes of Berkshire life and his favorite poets and thinkers, and revealed the thoughtful, caring and generous man that he was. For the last 12 years of his life, Dick and Sue lived near Felicity in Portland, Oregon, where he turned his eye on the lush environment of the Pacific Northwest and enjoyed the city's art and musical offerings. He delighted in his grandchildren, Helen and Norris Meigs of Portland and Hanna and Elena Johnson of Minneapolis. "How simple happiness is, really," concludes one of Dick's poems. That lesson may be Dick's greatest legacy to all who remember himwhether it's to be found in a delicate spring bloom, a morning walk, or a fresh-baked loaf of bread. A brief memorial service will be held at Willamette View in Portland on Monday, March 7, with a fuller celebration of his life planned for this summer in New Lebanon.

For those of you whom were unaware, as I was until just today, there's a wonderful write up on part of Dick's life at: http://www.darrow62.com/Nunley%20Memorial/Nunley_Groth.html
He remains one of the top teachers who I felt influenced me in life.

I was a student of Richard Nunleys at BCC in 1977. I still can recall him reading aloud Huckelberry Finn and As I Lay Dying. He read with a dramatic flair and he teased the meaning out of the text. I became an educator and I credit the inspiration I have to this day from the time I spent in his classroom.

I loved having professor Nunley as my teacher at BCC in 1989. He emphasized 'specificity' which helped me immensely later at Smith College. He was kind, caring and encouraging and even gave me an award for my essay writing which I greatly appreciated. Kari Amdahl

I was one of professor Nunley's students at BCC in the late 70's. To this day his call for "Specificity!" still rings in my ears. He was a joy to have as a teacher and I'll continue to hold his memory dear. My deepest sympathy at your loss. Art G.

I have become hooked on the Berkshires, due to reading Mr. Nunley's "Berkshire Reader"... That compendium will affect the future popularity of the Berkshires more than any other "product of man"..
RIP, Mr. Nunley.

As I think back on all of my professors very few come to mind as clearly as Mr. Nunley. In fact, even to this day I often talk of the professor that never graded a paper with a letter or a number but instead used terms like "ok","so so" or "so ok". I remember how hard I worked to turn those "ok" into a "good"!

RIP - Professor Nunley

I remember dickinson n very fondly. His columns should be published in a book. I remember a course I took with him at Arrowhead on Melville and Whitman. His Berkshire Anthology is the book on Berkshire writers. He was a great man and I loved him.

Circa 1988 - Mr. Nunley taught me how to write an essay, that's for sure. Every time I need to write or am talking to my own children about how to compose an essay, it's Mr. Nunley who comes to mind. RIP!

Mr Nunley (at BCC)was the sort of literature teacher who I still think of and remember his words 40 years later. Specifically, he helped me learn to comprehend more clearly what authors are messaging to the reader when they write fiction. This spread to other art forms as well.

To the Nunley family,
I was deeply saddened to learn of the loss of Mr. Nunley. I was one of his students at Berkshire Community College. As was so aptly put his influence change the tragectory of my life. High thinking, simple living is a mantra that I attribute to him. The lives of many were affected by all who knew him. I was privileged to have been taught by such a wonderful man. May you all have my sincere condolences. Peace to you all.

I took Freshman Composition from Professor Nunley in 1985. I must say that he changed my academic aspirations greatly. He believed in my writing and I never will forget how much his support meant to me. I have had several professors since and few have made the impact on my life that he did. I see how the other condolences here are similar to mine and I suspect that he touched the lives of so many more in his life. Blessings to your family.
