Ryan Wood Obituary

He may have lost his sight, but his vision was clear, he lived by the words "Never Give Up."

When presented with life-altering changes to how he moved through the world, how he perceived and was perceived, his unwavering spirit met every challenge with a sage philosophy, elegant sophistication, and enduring grace.

When his vision ceased, he compensated with his hearing, by taking verbal direction and continuing to master his beloved video games.

Ever curious, his brilliant mind eagerly continued seeking and exploring. With each loss to Neurofibromatosis, he courageously opened his eternally pliant heart to a select group of dedicated teachers, paras and aides. Vision loss meant it was time to learn through his fingertips and navigate his surroundings for potential obstacles with a white cane. He mastered each new task, maintained his independence and displayed his undeniable sense of humor. He used his sense of humor every day- one of his favorites being, "I'll see you later...well you know what I mean."

When his hearing ceased, he remained acutely in-tune to the ever present heartbeat of his family, and together they used tactile sign and Braille to share and converse.

Our Ryan was collectively held and cherished in each remarkable circle of which he was part. Ryan will forever be our warrior, teacher, and friend.

Ryan Ellis Wood, 19 of Pittsfield passed beyond the veil Saturday at home, surrounded by his loving and devoted family.

Ryan was born in Pittsfield, January 7, 1999, the son of David and Julie (Sanginetti) Wood.

He was a steam engine enthusiast, devoted Star Wars fan, gifted writer and artist, keen collector, ardent hobbyist, accomplished animal whisperer, and consummate foodie. A wise and clever soul whose sense of humor will keep us laughing forever. He managed to bring light wherever he went, and made a tremendous impact on everyone he met.

Ryan was a student at Stearns Elementary, Herberg Middle, and BART Charter, where he was named to the Honor Roll. He was most recently a student of Pittsfield High School. He was a parishioner of the former Mt. Carmel Church, and a member of the Cub Scouts, Pack #1 and Boy Scouts, Pack #1 in Pittsfield

Ryan developed a special circle of support in his teachers, paraprofessionals, doctors, nurses and specialists, members of Camp Vision and Camp Sunshine, and many friends at the Boys and Girls Club of Pittsfield.

Ryan leaves at home David and Julie (Sanginetti) Wood, Tianna Houle, and his faithful companion Riley, "The Wonder Dog."

Ryan was predeceased by his paternal grandparents David and Linda (Grady) Wood and his maternal grandparents Vincent and Virginia (Russo) Sanginetti. He also leaves his many loving aunts, uncles and cousins who traveled this journey with him. His family was the light of his life.

My sweet Ryan, Another year has gone by without you. But also another year that your memory remains with all who loved you. I continue to miss you as much today as I did 4 years ago but I am at peace knowing that you are no longer suffering with all the losses you had to endure in your final years here on earth. You will forever be remembered with so much love.

Oh my dear sweet friend Ryan, How can it be three years already? You are missed so much. Today as I sat and reflected on all those special times we shared and all the memories we made it helped me to smile as I hold each one so very close to my heart. I don´t think anyone of us who knew you will ever be free of the emptiness that we feel but as time goes on it will hopefully bring more wonderful memories of our times together which in turn will bring on more smiles. I can´t imagine what life would have been like had you not been such a very special part of it. Here´s to all the memories. Love you so much Ryan!

My sweet friend Ryan,
I can not believe a year has passed since you left this life on earth but I want you to know that despite the passing of time your memory remains very much alive. I find comfort in thinking back to all the fun memories we had when you and Brandon were growing up such as our trip to Darien Lake and Maine and you running back to your teacher the day after your mom and I were weighed at weight watches to report how well we did or didn't do for the week. I am thankful for all of those wonderful memories. I know you are now at peace and with all the loved ones that departed so early on in your life. Until we meet again.

Hi Julie and Dave,
I am so sorry for your loss. Ryan taught us all so much, how to love and how to live. I pray for you both, but I know Ryan is at peace in heaven resting in the arms of angels.

When I was training for the marathon I used to listen to, "Unsteady," by X Ambassador. I shared with others that this was, "my training song." To me it was me who was a little "unsteady." However, others assumed Ryan was the unsteady one. What they didn't know was that I was gathering strength from Ryan and his message. I was going through the toughest time in my life due to my divorce and I was truly "unsteady." I gained strength from Ryan and his courage. I truly think of him so often and I want you to know what an amazing young man he was and a, "teacher," to so many.

My love and blessings to you both.

Words can never convey the depth of my condolences for your loss. I am so blessed to have met him and to receive one of the amazing intricate three dimensional wooden puzzles he put together on his own. A person with sight would have been challenged to achieve such beautiful art work. Ryan truly was a very special soul. No parent should have to go thru what you are enduring but please remember that "every memory brings a blessing". My heart and my prayers go to you as well to his Uncle John who truly loved him and considered him his best friend, in addition to his beloved nephew.
