Marty was such a fresh light to the Kansas City Chiefs! His connection with the players, his love for the game was seen every time they took the field. He will always be in our memory. I always picture him hugging Derrick Thomas, from a Chiefs video archive We know your loss is so much more personal but having lost my mother in law to Alzheimers I know the pain you suffered as a family. God bless all of you. Know inn your heart that Marty is in a good place looking down on us.

I am truly at loss of words to express the loss of a great coach
In my time in the military , I followed Coach Schottenheimer watching him on the sidelines both during his times Coaching the Browns, then our Chiefs and in San Diego
When he was with our Chiefs he really had great battles in our Division that were exiting and great to watch with great defense and Power "Martyball" football
After his departure from our Chiefs It was really tough for me to watch him on the sidelines with the Chargers versus our Chiefs!
Coach Marty was the True ORIGINATOR OF LIGHTING OF THE "ARROWHEAD STADIUM HOME FIELD 12th Man" and the Master of tough defenses and Smash mouth Offense Marty Ball.
To the Entire Family of Coach Marty , my sincerest condolences and prayers to you all for his loss as I to will forever cherish him and his memories as a true fan of the KC Chiefs
I am looking forward to his future induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame one day as he truly deserves this honor
May God Bless
George Schottenheimer

My dad and I would watch Marty play on Sunday. At that time, Marty had the longest last name in the NFL. When he became head coach of the Browns, I went up to see Marty at the practice facility a few times. One funny story about the Schottenheimer last name. My wife and I went to a restaurant and there were waiters hovering around our table. I told my wife they want autographs or tickets and we have neither so let's just enjoy the attention. Even though our families weren't close, we followed Marty's career through the years. We were proud of our famous cousin. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

As an NFL fan since I was a child in the '60s, I ended up in San Diego in the '90s I became a Chargers fan. I remember the year he took to 14-2 and we lost in the AFC CHAMPIONSHIP game to the Patriots. But it wasn't Martyrs' fault the players on the field caused the loss and his bad luck with the Browns, I mean what can you say, You made it exciting to be a Chargers fan in San Diego. Thanks for the memories Marty R.I.P.

I grew up a Dallas Cowboys fan in the 70’s & 80’s but was born & raised in KCMO. In 1988-89 when Carl Peterson hired Marty, drafted Derrick Thomas....I said to myself, something special is happening with the Chiefs! Ever since I’ve been a fan. I even hopped on a Greyound to travel to Buffalo from KC for the AFC Championship game... although Marty & the Chiefs never got to the SB, they left an indelible mark on my life. Giving me hope, inspiration, & entertainment. I will always be grateful to Marty! He’ll always be “my coach”! Thanks for the memories & RIP. My sincerest condolences to the family. God Bless!

Pat... Maryjean and I were deeply saddened to learn of Marty's passing. Please know that you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers.
Marty, as a sophomore, was my introduction to the University of Pittsburgh and as luck would have it, my roommate my freshman year. Right away we were friends. He was smart and taught me how to navigate life as a student athlete. Thinking about it now, he was coaching me then.
Rest in Peace dear friend, you will be missed!

Sad to hear of Marty's passing Pat. Many fond memories of the family's initial arrival in Cleveland , the house hunting and then the game day encounters at the ticket office throughout your Browns tenure. Marty was one of the good guys and will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire Schottenheimer family during the days ahead. God Bless!

It is with sad heart as I learned of Marty's death. I was an NFL referee when Marty as a player and then as a coach. He was always pleasant and honorable to work with. After we had both retired, we were booked together on cruise ships as guest speakers. I was honored to get to know him as an individual beyond that of a coach.
My prayers are to Pat, his wife and his family. He lived a wonderful life.

Marty Schottenheimer was a role model and hero to me . I always admired and respected him and used his coaching , leadership and motivational skills as a model throughout my working career . I always remembered his words to his players to "focus and finish" and used this phrase to inspire and guide me through life. I am a Chiefs fan from Philadelphia and one of my fondest memories was when I took a birthday cake that I had a bakery make especially for him to the hotel where the team held their meetings when Kansas City played the Eagles here in Philadelphia, back in September of 1998 . I have some great photos of the two of us , as well as some correspondence that Coach Schottenheimer took the time to send me over the years . When I met him in Kansas City in 1995, he took the time to chat with my wife and I. I prayed for him and his family throughout his illness, having experienced the same challenges in my family. He had a major impact on my life and I will miss him dearly .

Marty, known for his intelligence, heart, and decency, was a classmate of mine at Pitt and one of my father’s favorite players there. I last saw Marty at a San Diego Chargers’ camp in 2005. We chatted a bit about my dad and Pitt experiences, and I found him to be the same affable, genuine person I knew long ago. My sincere condolences to the family, and may he Rest In Peace.

Marty was a teammate of mine on the 1970 Boston Patriots. His football acumen was very evident as he knew defensive football extremely well. Even better than our coaches. You knew he would make a hellava coach one day. Marty was a solid player but was even a better person. We shared a lot of laughs and memories in our lockerroom. RIP my old friend. Hopefully you will be voted into the NFL Hall of Fame in the near future as your coaching accomplishments certainly deserve that honor.

I was a Cleveland Browns season ticket holder when Marty got my attention when he was the Defensive Coordinator for the Cleveland Browns. You could tell his players loved to play for him based on their mental toughness and performance every sunday. When Marty became the Cleveland Browns Head Coach the the true Browns tradition started to shine. You brought pride back to Cleveland Browns Football. As a employee of Strongsville City Schools I got to know your family and they were tremendous people. I remember when playoff time came around your daughter Kristin got the whole school fired up and everyone was dressed in orange and brown. You are a very lucky man and should be proud of the love, compassion, and understanding you have instilled in your family. Your lead will be missed, but I'm sure your wife and kids truly know the baton has been handed off for them to move forward. The Lord has asked a great man to sit at his side. God Bless to your wife and family

Marty was one of the most underrated coaches in the NFL. I'm only 6 years younger, but I looked at him like a father figure even though I never met the man. I had the great pleasure of literary bumping into Coach Schottenheimer.
Back in aprox. 2004-2006 Marty was I believe visiting his son Brian who was working for the Jets at the Jets training facility next door to Nassau Coliseum & Hofstra University.
I was in the coliseum deli and I noticed Marty was eating lunch by himself and reading the sports section of the paper.
As I finished ordering my lunch and as I turned around, Marty got up and bumped into me and jostled my lunch tray.
He was so apologetic and was so nice to me and said he was very sorry. He asked if I was alright and did I need help?
I know this is a very minor experience I had with him, but here I am standing in front of an NFL coach who is a NFL legend and his approach was so down to earth and genuine.
No attitude or ego whatsoever.
A real gentleman and caring human being.
I was totally impressed and did not forget it.
God bless, and RIP Coach Schottenheimer,
Howard Schivek

This is Tony Kerr. I was the football manager at Blue Valley School when Marty's son Brian was our quarterback who took us to state. My company did some work for Marty and Pat when they moved to Lake Norman many years ago. I tell anyone I get a chance to, that they were the two kindest people I have ever met on a professional and personal level. Marty would buy my small crew lunch and would make us all sit down and eat , and never allow us to work through lunch. He reminded us " all questions about English and Football , ask him, Pat was to answer any other questions we had". I think of their kindness everyday ! The world would be a much better place with more people like Marty and his wife! My condolences to all the family .
