Edward Humphreys Obituary

Dr. Edward Tristram "Doc" Humphreys, 94, of Columbia, Missouri, passed away December 3, 2012.
Ed was the youngest of three children born to Ella (Stebbins) and Homer Humphreys on February 16, 1918 in Lebanon, Missouri. He spent his early years there and graduated from Lebanon High School before attending college at William Jewell College in Liberty, Missouri and the University of Missouri in Columbia. He completed his medical education at MU and Northwestern University in Chicago and enlisted in the Navy during WW II, where he spent time in the medical corps in Bremerton, Washington and the Philippine Islands. While attending medical school, he met and married Annie Laurie Schlotzhauer on August 8, 1942. After the war, he and Annie settled first in Pilot Grove and then later in Boonville, Missouri where he practiced medicine for 39 years as a surgeon with the Boonville Medical Group and delivered over 3400 babies during his career. He and Annie celebrated 64 years of marriage together and raised 5 children. Doc was an avid tennis and basketball player during his high school years despite work and family obligations, and an equally avid golfer, bowler and hunter in the years that followed. He was a passionately dedicated physician who worked extra long hours but always provided for his family and instilled in his children a strong work ethic.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his sister Frannie and brother Charlie. He is survived by his children, Eleanoire Burkhead (the late Frank) of Jefferson City, Missouri, Jane Reintjes (G. Forest) of Olathe, Kansas, Ed Humphreys, II (Celia) of Blue Springs, Missouri, Pat Humphreys of Columbia, Missouri, Beth Nesbitt (David) of Wichita, Kansas, 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Lenoir Woods and Boone Hospital in Columbia for the care they gave to their father.
A private graveside service will be held to celebrate his life. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established at Redeemer Presbyterian Church, 101 N. Grace Lane, Columbia, Missouri 65201. Online condolences may be expressed to the family at [email protected]. Services by Meisenheimer Funeral Home, Pilot Grove, Missouri.

What great memories, smiles, and tears this obituary brought to me. Your parents were wonderful Christian people who always had smiles and right words for anyone and everyone they met. Your dad delivered both my children, as well as me and one of my brothers. You will be in our prayers for comfort and peace.

My family and I were privileged to know Doc and his family for many years. He was an institution around the B-ville area as was his family. His sense of humor was a great asset for him, along with compassion and dedication to his patients.. His legacy to the Cooper Co. area will never be forgotten..my sympathy to his family.

Doc was always my hero. I almost died while having my first child in 1958. The Humphreys family was on vacation and Doc cut his vacation short and came back to Boonville. He sat by my bed for two days and held my hand. I can still hear him saying, "Come on soldier, you can make it!" My blessings to all his family.
