PHYLLIS GARLAND

Garland, Phyllis (Turner) Of Duxbury, formerly of Hingham, died on June 23, 2015 at Newfield House in Plymouth at the age of 97, surrounded by her beloved family. She was the widow of Donald M. Garland, M.D. Phyllis was born in Boston and grew up in Watertown, MA and graduated from Watertown High School. She received her degree in French from Wheaton College (Mass.) in 1939 and taught high school for several years. She married Dr. Garland in 1943 who served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps for three years. The Garlands lived in Carlisle, PA, New York City, and Washington, DC. before moving to Hingham in 1946. Dr. Garland set up his practice there and Phyllis managed it for the first five years. During the many years she lived in Hingham, Phyllis was a fully engaged participant in many Hingham activities. She had been a member of the Hingham Garden Club, the Hingham Historical Society, the Hingham Tennis Club, Campfire Girls, and the Hingham Congregational Church. The Garlands moved to Beaufort, SC to spend winters in 1982 while spending their summers in Fitzwilliam, NH. They returned to the South Shore to live in 1996. Phyllis enjoyed gardening, golf, tennis, and especially music during her adult life. She was a great fan of the Red Sox and Patriots. She was also a devoted supporter of Wheaton College and a generous contributor to many social, educational, medical and environmental causes. A wonderful mother and a great friend, Phyllis is survived by her children: Sharon Garland Crampton of Alexandria, VA; Russell M. Garland of Kingston, MA; David M. Garland of Peterborough, NH; and Nancy T. Garland of Watertown, MA. She is also survived by six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, whom she loved deeply. Burial will be private. There will be a Reception to celebrate Phyllis' life on Thursday, July 9, 2015 at 2pm at the Village at Duxbury (290 Kings Town Way, Duxbury, MA). In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Newfield House Scholarship Fund, 19 Newfield Street, Plymouth, MA 02360, or to a charity of choice.
